So....honestly, I am not particularly a fan of Stephen King.
I've not read a lot of his work; I plan on reading The Stand. I've read some of his short stories and thought they were stupid. The movies for Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption were amazing, and I love the miniseries they made from IT, mostly cause ickles!Seth Green and Jonathan Brandis, and I know the kid who played ickleillEddieSpaghetti.
My dad read me The Hobbit when I was four (he would read a paragraph or two and then we talk about what exactly it meant/what was going on), and the next fantasy book I read was one he handed me called Eyes of the Dragon, written by Stephen King. After trying and being HORRIFICALLY SCARRED by a few of his other novels, I found The Gunslinger.
I agree with King; that's an awesome first line. Lately I have learned to hate his ego OMG THE HATE, but I will give him that one gladly. And for a long time I was convinced this series was the BEST THING EVER. It's like a mix between sci fi/fantasy/a western that I love and LOVED LOVED LOVED for SO LONG (mostly cause it's taken him so long to write, ha). I really like the way King writes completely trippy things that make no sense but are described in detail and yet not fully. My imagination is able to fill in his gaps really well; that's why I don't like a lot of his stuff. It's like when you finally SEE the monster in a scary movie and it's sort of a let down. He did good with Dark Tower, though, and for the most part trusted the Constant Reader's imagination.
I'm sad about the ending of the Dark Tower. I KNEW pretty much everything that would happen, in regard to life and death, cause there was no other way, but there were a few things that severely irk me. The main of which is WHAT THE HECK IS KING'S DEAL WITH SUSANNAH?! She's not even that great a character, I AM SORRY BUT SHE IS NOT I DUN CARE HOW "STRONG" SHE IS. I think he's enthralled with the voices she hears or whatever, but ICK she is ANNOYING and ANNOYS me.
Jake and Eddie and Oy, though. *respect* Three of my favorite characters in the history of EVER. AND YES YES YES, YOU MADE ME CRY, ARE YOU HAPPY?! When SHE *spits out the word* goes back to New York? Cop out. UGH.
Roland and the Tower didn't bother me so much, though I was a bit disappointed in the Crimson King. OH YEAH, and I was completely frustrated with the lecture about putting the book down before reading that part. Pissed off as I had not been since the sixth book. I think the story became too big for him. It's a shame. The first part of the series is really just....ah. So SO good.
Song of Susannah? One of the worst books ever published, siriusly. WTF dude. It makes me want to weep; if you compare it to books 1 - 3 it's almost as though it is a totally different....everything.
/end caps abuse and confusing of the flist.
I am kinda sad it's over, considering I've been reading the thing for however many years? Something around 10, I think.
Go then, there are other worlds than these.
*sigh*
