I got "tough" with Sham tonight about moving off my leg. She knows what I want, I've just been letting her get away with being less than responsive for so long. Same with the walking with impulsion. I got what I wanted and all was good. Hopefully she'll remember it for next time. I have come to the conclusion that when she resists cantering she's just resisting because she can. Her canter strike-offs were beautiful tonight. Again, some tough love. She got kicked when she stalled from her trot to the walk, and even though I felt awful about it, there's no excuse for her ignoring my leg and stalling into downward transitions when really, she's not all that tired.

But I accomplished tonight what I set out to accomplish. By the end of the lesson she was moving right off my legs when I asked, and really, it's not like I savagely beat her, I just insisted on what I wanted and when she didn't respond, I put more pressure on her about it.

I even got her to back while she was rounded. Then before I realised that she was doing it she hollowed her back and threw up her head.

I picked up the left diagonal maybe twice. *sigh* I hate this. This is the one thing that I just can't get through. But I keep practising, because one day I'll get it, and when I finally do get it consistantly I'll be so proud of myself. I can feel the canter leads no problem, and I can get the left diagonal by feel when we're going in circles, and I can HEAR the left diagonal, but I have to really concentrate on that.

Then I found that I was getting frustrated about it so I warmed her down and let her go back to her boyfriend. She's in heat so she was yelling all night, and she was yelling all day, and Smoke keeps yelling back at her.

But I accomplished what I went out to do, and that was to get her to listen to my leg better. There's still work to be done, but at the end she was oodles better than at the beginning.

Ah life with horses. Wouldn't trade it for all the men in the world :)
