Saw the new FMA movie tonight. Thankfully there's a movie theatre in my city and it's within biking distance. Too bad it was pouring down rain both ways!
That aside,
This movie seems to be stand alone "Ed and Al have another random adventure", but not AU. Ed and Al can do the clap alchemy, though I don't recall exactly where in canon that is (and I'm too lazy to go look it up ;p). Mustang, Hawkeye, Breda and Winry make brief appearances. Armstrong also shows up, which I got really excited about, but he's only in one short cameo, alas.
The plot was easy to follow, oppressed minority ethnic group wants to regain their ancestral homelands, lots of bad stuff happens. Despite the glaring similarities to the Ishvalians (with less mass genocide), not too simple though it got a bit convoluted with BAM EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM IS A BAD GUY, though that could also be an indication of my inadequate Japanese abilities.
The original characters were designed by Arakawa herself, well rounded and not too Mary Sue-ish.
ALMOST.
Julia, main female OC, does get OVAR NINE THOUSAND power levels at one point, but it's justified in the movie. Still, better than other anime movies I've seen with an OC female lead oozing Mary Sue qualities (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, NARUTO). Also some nice twists to keep you interested in them.
Not gonna compare it to the first movie, as that was an entirely different creature. But, a very enjoyable entry into the franchise. Definitely worth a watch if you're an FMA fan!
...well, that turned out to be very NOT brief.
