Today is the last day for persons eligible for Medicare to sign up for one of the many confusing plans for Medicare Plan D.
Aside from the issues involved with the coverage under these plans, one interesting issue is that they've set a deadline of.... well, yesterday at midnight actually, to sign up for one of the plans. If a person did not sign up, they would incur a LIFETIME penalty, of (I believe it was) 1% of the normal fee or somesuch.
President Bush said on this issue, that "Deadlines create finality".
Hello? HELLO?
Where ELSE do we think we might want to have a deadline set, to create this majestic thing known as finality?
I don't know about everyone else reading this, but if I had to create an end to something (and I mean no disrespect to those on Medicare) I'd think ending a pretty bad war in another country, where people are dying in ever-increasing numbers, would be a little higher on the list than ending the wait that drug companies have to go through while elderly persons try to stretch their pensions and savings accounts as far as they can.
Oh, those poor drug companies. Brings a tear to the eye, really.
