That disaster

Feb 17, 2009 20:36

This log's freaking old. I forgot I had it till just recently, then I forgot where I put it. It's also unfinished due to RL interference. But I am nothing if not thorough!

Who: Rhodya and Kiah
When: Dusk on day 2, month 10, turn 18 of Interval 10.
Where: Living Cavern, Fort Weyr
What: Rhodya's eating dinner when a new arrival, Kiah, comes in fresh off the road and looking to report in. Rhodya convinces her to sit and have a meal first.

Early evening, and dinner is just getting started. The living cavern is a mess of people pushing this way and that as they try to get to that table with their friends, over there, or the one with the food on it, over here. Rhodya has just managed to squeeze through the whole mess and find herself an open seat, which she drops into with a sigh of relief. "Good to get off the ole feet," she tells no one in particular, addressing a smile towards everyone else around the table.

Kiah stumbles in from the tunnel, getting tossed to and fro a bit as she emerges. She's got a worn travel bag over one shoulder and a hard case in one hand. The marking on the outside is of the Bakercraft. The tools of her trade perhaps. She gets nudged from one side, then the other and nearly stumbles right into Rhodya. She jumps back again, as much as she can in this crush and bows slightly in apology. "Oh, I'm so sorry. Its very crowded."

Rhodya reflexively puts out a hand when somebody comes stumbling towards her, but withdraws it when Kiah steadies herself on her own. "Hey, it ain't no worry. Gets a little crazy in here." She glances at the stuff Kiah's holding. "Hey, you wanna put any of that down here? I'll guard it for you so you don't have to carry it through all that nonsense." She waves a hand at the bustling crowd.

Kiah glances up at the nonsense and just shakes her head. "Oh, no. I'd really rather not go into that disaster. I need to report to whomever is the Head Baker or Cook here. I've been sent from the Baker Crafthall to be an apprentice here. Do you know who I'd talk to?"

"Oh! Heck yeah," Rhodya says. She twists in her seat, trying to get a view of the room behind her. She points at a set of stairs going up. "Over that way, up the stairs, you're lookin' for a big fella named Larsen. Red face, red hair, y'can't possibly miss him." Untwisting herself, she casts a squint Kiah's way. "Don't know if I'd go right now, though, if I was you. The crazy in here ain't nothing compared to the crazy going on up at there, not at this hour."

Kiah's gaze follows the gesture up the stairs. Her face goes even more pale. "No. Not at mealtimes." She looks at a flutter of red hair that drifts over her view at the mention of red hair and a slight smile does touch her lips. "Probably a few more hours. Is there someplace safe I can put all of this, though? I'd not want anything to get lost or damaged."

Rhodya hums thoughtfully. "If you haven't got a personal trunk yet, I can't really think of a space. It'll be safe here, though, 'cause like I said I don't mind watching it. You been traveling, right?" She glances significantly at the bag. "Oughta get some food in ya, anyway."

Kiah shakes her head, ginger hair bouncing around her head with a life of its own, even braided back. "There wasn't room for a trunk, I hitched a ride with trader caravans the entire way. I have only this at the moment." She does sit the case down beside Rhodya. "Food, I haven't had more than dried fruit and meatrolls for weeks." She pats the beltpouch at her waist as though checking what's still left within.

Rhodya whistles and shakes her head. "That's a looong trip, then, and you definitely need some food. You're in for a treat, 'cause we've got good kitchens." She looks down at her own plate, piled high with good-smelling dinner treats. The motion Kiah makes in patting her beltpouch catches her eye, though, and distracts her. "Hey, you put that away, ya hear?" she commands - but with a smile. "If you're posted here, even if you ain't checked in yet, you're weyrfolk. Ain't no need to pay."

Kiah slides, or more specifically slumps into a spot next to Rhodya casting her a grateful smile. "I'm sorry, I've never really been out of the crafthold before. Apparently that's the reason I've been sent here, too set in my ways." She lifts up a foot as though she means to rub it and then puts it back down as though realizing people are eating around her. "I'm just grateful to be able to sit down a moment. How is it, living here? Do you like it?

Sympathetic towards the Kiah's tired feet, Rhodya takes a bowl of stew off her tray and pushes it towards the other woman. Followed by a spoon. "Well, I do like it, but I'm weyrbred so it's the kind of life I'm used to." She grins. "I'm probably too set in my ways, myself, but I'm all right with that. Now, Fort specifically," she looks around the cavern, "is a real nice place, real welcoming. I transferred here a few months back from Igen, but the people took me in right away. I'm sure they'll do the same for you."

Kiah is openly surprised as the stew slides in front of her and takes the spoon gingerly. "Oh. I'm not much more familiar with weyrfolk than the visits we get from dragons here and there. To be honest, I always found somewhere else to be." She smiles a bit wryly and shrugs, dipping the spoon into the bowl and lifting it to taste. "I'm sure I'll settle in." Her words sound hesitate, but her smile shows that she's willing to try.

Rhodya gives her new tablemate a friendly and encouraging pat on the back. "Sure ya will. There's plenty of places to talk to people - I like the Leaking Cavern, myself, the local bar - and the kitchens're friendly, so you'll have friends there in less than a seven. Guaranteed." She winks before turning to her own food, grabbing a fork and digging it. Before stuffing her mouth, though, she asks, "You ain't afraid of dragons, are ya?"

Kiah pauses at that last question, placing her spoon down carefully on the table beside her bowl. "I'm not really sure. I never got close enough to tell if they really frightened me." She likes her little spot in the kitchens very much. "I love to bake, you see? And sometimes a right delicous pie or confection will take an entire day, especially when you're feeding a large group." She picks her spoon back up again and stirs the soup. "The soup is very good."
