Right, so that was okay. Matt thinks it was all really good and clever and I am just...okay? Not bad, not disappointed particularly, just okay. I think the problem I have with new Who in general is that it does too much buildup prior to the final episode, and then the final episode always sort of feels anti-climactic to me because it cannot up the ante.
So please do not come down on my head like a ton of bricks because I am not saying I hated it.
The good:
- THE BRIG TRIBUTE OH MY GOD. That was honestly done perfectly. If the whole episode had been written that solidly, I'd be a lot happier.
- All the people who love the Doctor! That was great. They are all there for him. bless, that makes me weepy. /may have too much bleed/
- Awesome Rory! Suit and Office Amy! I want to look that good in a fem!suit.
The meh:
- It tried to do too much in 45 minutes. Alongside the script, there were the awesome concepts: live chess, the deadly skull catacombs, River and Amy being comfortable with each other again and drinking too much white wine, and of course all of time in one place...so much cool stuff, almost too dazzling in its coolness. (How did, out of everything, the Doctor's place he was zapped to be Roman-prisoner-of-Churchill, I am confused?)
As the Radio Times
says, "Is the conclusion to the Doctor/River/Silence saga truly satisfying or just rather cleverly behaving as though it is?"
- And indeed, I want to know more about River's childhood, what is up?
The bad:
- The emphasis in the script about time was (nearly) fucked up by a woman and a woman's love and how River is hell in high heels. With the latter, yes, she is, but the excess sexualization is getting to me. I really prefer Fatigues!River like at the end. WRITE TO ME ABOUT FATIGUES!RIVER.
The brilliant:
- "My friends have always been the best of me." I will forgive EVERYTHING for this quote.
Okay, the more I think about it, the happier I am with it. But not pee-pants thrilled, is all.
