Today was my brother's wedding. I was his best man and, as such, was required to give a toast to the new couple. I've had 6 months to write this thing and, to be honest, I wrote this on Friday while at work. Truthfully, I'd rather have kept the writers block than be inspired this way. This was my toast.
There comes a time in every wedding where the guy whose laughed as everyone ran around in a panic gets to say a few words.
This was difficult for me, I really didn't know what to say. The list of things I'm not allowed to bring up is pretty long. There's Nick and I's history of violence towards each other, his old girlfriends, those girls who wanted to be his girlfriend, and, of course, our mother.
I'd hit the brick wall. This week, though, a dear friend of mine reminded me of the first rule of life. When you find someone, that special someone, that person you just can't live without, you grab them and hold onto them tight. Don't hesitate, don't think about it, just do it.
See, that first rule of life is that we don't have a great deal of time here and if you don't do all you can to keep that special someone, you may find that you're just too damn late.
Fortunately, Nick always was good at finding what he wants and keeping hold of it. Especially if I was the one who'd bought it in the first place. And so, a toast to my brother and my new sister in law, Shastel. You've managed to hold her, Nick, now do all you can to keep her. Cheers.
And, to my good friend, Shaun Christopher. This world is a darker place without you. Fare well, my friend.
hardest speech i've ever given.
