Okay I'm going to rant here (big surprise).
Last night I watched "Das Boot" one of my favorite movies and what I consider my first "grown up" movie. Anyway this morning I heard some talking head review talking about a "chick flick" (don't get me started on that term) anyway my mind then of course jumped to the idea that if there are chick flicks, and kid's films, then there must be guy flicks. Likely those with lots of T&A and gratuitous violence.
Well I would like to claim a title of "Real Guy Movies." To indicate what I think belongs in here I will list my candidate movies in no particular order. Feel free to argue and discuss them:
Das Boot: Surviving in madness and brutal conditions. Doing what has to be done even when you know you're ultimately doomed. Showing emotion, but not being mastered by them. Either version is good--but it's best in German with the subtitles.
Bridge over the River Kwai: I can't watch the end of this movie. The reason I put this movie here, and why I can't watch it all the way through. Guniess's final speech on the bridge the night before it's blown up.
Seven Samurai: Again it's the end that gets me.
Fitzcoraldo What isn't there to like about lone obsession over common sense.
The African Queen: Romance and adventure. Bogart and Hepburn. What more need be said?
there are other movies that could be added here like The Great Santinii, Planet of the Apes (the original and only real one if you ask me), The Shootist, Rooster Cogburn. Well there are my picks for Real Guy Movies.
