Work It!

I've now been working at Barnes and Noble for a week. So far, it's so much better than the place I used to be. I get along with everyone pretty well. There's one manager who is a tad uptight and I don't care for her, but I can coexist enough. I'm cross-training to work in any department, though my chief job is bookseller. So far, I've been in customer service, music, bagging at the cashier on Harry Potter night/morning(7PM to 2AM ouch!, but was a total initiation to break me in) and today in children's. Childrens is a lot like being a maid for a few hours. Pick up and straighten, answer a few questions when needed,. I've enjoyed it all, except for uncomfortable shoes. The dress code is vague, so tomorrow I'm wearing these non-tennis shoes, but not dress shoes either and see if they squak at me. I figure I'm better able to serve if I'm able to walk without staggering. I bought my first purchase with employee discount which is awesome. It's kind of a knockoff of Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and Da Vinci Code, but it's called Michelangelo's Notebook and is by Paul Christopher. Saw it on the shelf, looked interesting, the price was well within what I would spend on a book I had never read, so I got it. They have a book lending program at my work where I can get a hardcover book for 14 days and return it in salable condition and I don't have to pay, but this book is paperback. I figure I can afford $6, even if the book sucks, which it shouldn't. I've been getting good hours and I just am happier here. I still get to see people I know, and I see a lot of the kids at church, so I win overall. One of the absolute best things now is that I can look in my closet and ask "What do I WANT to wear today?". Granted there are some things forbidden, such as jeans, but it's a lot more relaxed than a uniform. It's so nice to be working with ADULTS for a change, and I don't mean the kids under 6. So far, NO DRAMA either. The mentality is totally different. Much more mature. Especially management, who is old enough to know how to do their job, and can acutally do it where the other employees respect them. Everyone works! What an idea! We also have a break room that we can go into and not feel like we're still in the bookstore. Nice to get away for a few minutes and collect yourself. I'm getting great hours, so all in all, I'm golden right now. It's so worth the little bit of pay cut just to be happy. That's about it for now, I'm over and out.
