"Checking"

Mar 25, 2005 10:37

Since the advent of the Internet, I've noticed myself forever enslaved to checking my e-mail, checking news sites, checking anything. With cell phones in our pockets, I find myself and friends playing with our phones all the time. People aren't smoking any more, they're checking.

Checking is going to drive me insane. Really, it keeps me from getting little done at work. If I get stressed out or bored at work (pretty much my two work moods), I find myself chronically checking my e-mail and blog.

Yesterday, one of the engineers I work with walked into the breakroom at 3 pm. I was getting a cup of tea and she pulled out a crusty Lean Cuisine from the microwave. She'd gotten so engrossed in a project that she'd forgotten to get her lunch that she'd nuked at noon...

I'm too busy checking things to let things like that go by. I'd like a happy medium between me and that engineer. I can get out of a trance to check up on things, but I can also focus on one task without getting bogged down in little electronic blips.

Any advice for overcoming the IM, e-mail, web frenzy? Just shut the stuff off??
