Creative Juices

After attending countless panels at SXSW this past weekend, I am feeling inspired again. I more like writing, planning, networking, and everything else involved in making movies than I have, well since I went to the Austin Film Festival back in October. The key is in doing something, however small, every day. It's so easy to get caught up in your own little personal dramas to forget what you're really passionate about.

I've learned so much over the past few days:

  1. You must wear lots of black to be a filmmaker.
  2. Plan your film schedule around networking events so that you can eat for free.
  3. Drunk locals are more entertaining than other filmmakers.
  4. Every second attendee of filmfestival panels seems to be a software or hardware engineer on haitus who just bought a $3,000 prosumer DV camera but hasn't used it.
  5. For Terrajen, doidare, and LeLe: If you want to meet lots of smart, mildly cute straight guys in black, you're in business. I didn't ask any if they liked c**k though.
  6. You should really buy a ratty brown or black blazer before attending a film festival.

More serious observations:

  1. Write like crazy.
  2. Always have something cooking.
  3. Do it, do it, do it.
  4. Documentaries are funnier these days than narrative films at film festivals.
