Snippets return!

With the rewrite of Nemesis actually *gasp* going well, not only do wordcount posts return, but so do snippets!

This target number is subject to change, should I decide to go crazy and rewrite the whole book, rather than the first six or so chapters. Also, I could end up doing a word count meter for the whole book's actual rewrite process, once I complete these first 17,000 words.

And, to celebrate the day's week's progress, a snippet:

“This is bad,” said Drug, his features unnaturally pale, even beneath the red lights. He wore his dark hair slightly longer than standard military regs, and right now it was sticking to his forehead and temples as sweat bathed his skin. The heat outside was starting to seep through all the protections the Zephyr had.

“Probably not the time to mention it,” said Mercy around clenched teeth, “but I always regretted that thing back in the Gauntlet.” ‘The Gauntlet’ was the unofficial name for the Pararescue training program. Such an intensive two years, more than ninety percent of the candidates accepted didn’t make it. She and Drug had graduated together.

“That thing?” He actually turned his head to look at her, and his eyes, usually dark and sleepy looking, widened. “You mean the drunk thing? When you almost slept with me?”

“Yeah, that thing. If we’re gonna die, I have some regrets. That’s one.”

“Nice.” Now she tells me. “Wait, are you trying to be funny? Is this a joke?”

She scowled.

“No, I -” Mercy broke off when the ship bucked beneath them, suddenly kicked up, and undulated wildly as she scrambled to regain control.
