Snippety-snippet

I know a lot of my little space pirates snippets are short, pithy, and amusing, especially lately, but that's because they're the only bits I really can snippet. As the book progresses, snippeting any of the more serious stuff becomes waaaaaaay too spoilery.

So, another amusing moment from the life of Mercy. Trust me, she doesn't find it all that amusing, and anyway, there is all too little amusement in her life at the moment. Author's note: Christopher is a young teen who works for his older half-brother, Connor, who has invited Mercy to attend a super secret thing with him, as his guest.

“Um.” Mercy looked down at herself. “I was just going to wear this.”

Christopher’s face fell.

“But…well, okay.”

“Is there some reason I shouldn’t?” she asked. “You know where I’m going tonight better than I do.”

He shrugged, lifting one shoulder in a way meant to be offhand, but she could see how suddenly nervous he was.

“No, you could wear that, it’s just, well…it’s sort of traditional to wear whatever your date has picked out for you.”

“Excuse me?”

“That’s why Connor sent me. Normally I’d just leave it in your quarters, but I guess no one’s supposed to be going in them anymore, and anyway, I wasn’t sure if I should leave it in yours or Reaper’s…”

“Wait. Just hold on a minute. First, this is not a date. I’ve already told Connor I’m not going to pick him as a Consort. Second - what? Connor’s picking out clothes for me, now? What the hell is that?”

“Um…”

“I pick my own clothes, and I wear whatever the hell I want.”

“Uh, okay. It’s just a gift. A nice, you know, personal gift. All men buy women gifts.”

“Buy? You’re pirates. I thought you just took whatever you wanted?”

“Well, sure, from the Commonwealth. But we have our own money and stuff. Our own markets and banking system and everything. I work for Connor, you know. And you - you have several accounts in your name, since you’ve shown up to claim them.”

Mercy could feel the onset of a headache.

“Of course I do,” she muttered. “Fine, okay. You guys have an economic system. I still don’t want any gifts, especially clothes.”

“But…you’ve already been wearing some of them.”

She stared at him. And thought about the jacket she’d put on this morning without thinking about it, the one that fit her like it was tailored. She swiveled to look at Bones, then back at Christopher.

“So, all those clothes that just sort of appeared in my closet…”

“Are gifts. Mostly from Core members.”
