Snippet

I haven't posted one in awhile, and this was too much fun to write, not to share. From the most current chapter of the Nano project, which will be going up sometime today:

The cub was wagging its tail, like a dog begging for something.

“Um…hi,” she said experimentally.

It lifted its head, ears pricked forward, and whined again, louder. As if this had been some signal, the rest of the pile moved, bundles of fur abruptly standing up on gangly legs and stretching, muzzles yawning, tails wagging. Elysia realized she’d been sleeping in a pile of…puppies. Five of them, if she counted correctly. She sat up, and they whined and yipped, climbing over the top of one another to bump cold noses against her hands, pleading for attention. Oh, my, she thought, heart melting as she ran her fingers over soft fuzzy pelts. One day, these five would be fearsome vyusher warriors, like those she’d fought beside. But for now, they were a cute litter of puppies, competing for affection.

“Well, now,” said McClairen as he ducked inside the doorway. “Is that how we treat our guests, climbing all over them like the furniture?”
