I am back at my apartment now after six months of house sitting. It has been very busy at work and I’ve been in and out of the office a lot at courses and meetings. I have completed my annual requirement of corporate learning goals now and I am glad that is over with.

Some time in March my landlady got all new appliances for her kitchen. The plumber who installed her dishwasher apparently did not tighten some things properly and it leaked down the back of her cabinet and through my ceiling. Apparently she had gone out to a movie and when she returned she discovered that a fuse had blown. When she entered my apartment to flip the breaker switch she discovered a big flood from her dishwasher. The emergency plumbers cut a big hole out of my ceiling around the affected dry wall and they brought in an industrial dehumidifier for a few days and the wall-to-wall carpeting in my apartment needs to be replaced. It is long overdue for replacement anyway; it has been peeling up around edges and unravelling and gets caught in my vacuum cleaner and just doesn’t look good anymore, but at least the insurance company will pay for it now.

However, this means that I have to pack up almost everything I own for the carpet replacement and then unpack it again after it is done. It will be a good opportunity for reorganization and decluttering, but I have to essentially move out and move back in again without actually going anywhere.

I have taken a week of vacation next week to do this. I am not looking forward to all the work, but I am looking forward to the result. I am trying to remain optimistic. Despite the chore, I find myself looking forward to some time away from my job for a little while.
