today in my psychology class, we talked about substance abuse.
one of the topics covered was the disease model, particularly of alcholism.
basically stating that alcohism should be treated in society as if it were diabetes, or cancer, or heart disease; that it shouldn't have the stigma it does.

the professor said, 'it's not like cancer has that sort of stigma. we don't yell at people for having cancer'

and i wanted to shout, 'dammit otto, you have lupus.'

but i realized nobody would get it, so i laughed to myself.
