American Idol: Top 12 - Beatles week

Mar 11, 2008 23:28

Before I talk about American Idol, I just have to mark the date, because really, March 11th should be considered International due South Day...

They have called this day The Eleventh of March! And whom-so-ever of you gets through this day, unless you are shot in the head or somehow slain...you will stand at tiptoe...when e'er you hear the name again, and you will get excited!...At the name March The Eleventh!

We happy few, we few, we band of brothers...our names will be as like...household names. And those who are not here, be they sleeping or… doing something else...They will feel themselves...sort of crappy. Because they are not here to...to join the fight. On this day, the Eleventh of March!
- Buck Frobisher

Best series finale ever.

Syesha Mercado - Got To Get You Into My Life
She did the Earth, Wind & Fire version, and it wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad, either. And thankfully, for once she wasn’t shrieky.

Chikezie Eze - She’s a Woman
I am very impressed! He started out with a bluegrassy, O Brother Where Art Thou feel, and then turned it into a rocker. I loved it. His voice sounded great, and he was obviously having a great time up there on stage. I also like the fact that he got out of the “R&B crooner” box the judges want to stick him in, and made it totally, completely work for him.

Ramiele Malubay - In My Life
Oh, Ramiele. I really like you, but dammit, you’re getting boring. And the judges agree with me. I do find it interesting that she dedicated it to “my close friends who have left the show already” obviously meaning Danny.

Jason Castro - If I Fell
*happy sigh*
I think he could sing the damn phone book and it would make me happy. But seriously, I thought he sounded really good, and not just because I think he’s a cutie pie.

Carly Smithson - Come Together
I had it in my head that Amanda would sing this one, but I really liked Carly’s version. One of the backup singers completely overshadowed her on the first chorus (and then toned it down during the second chorus), but other than that, I thought she sounded very good.

David Cook - Eleanore Rigby
I really like his voice, and I really like his version of the song. I like the way he gives everything an emo vibe - I adored his version of Lionel Ritchie’s Hello last week, and I HATE that song - and I think he will have a very good career ahead of him after Idol. Simon said that David “could win the whole competition” which I thought was very interesting. I seriously doubt he’ll win, but I do think this will be a great springboard for him, just like it was for Daughtry.

Brooke White - Let It Be
When I heard it was going to be Beatles week, I cringed, because I knew someone would do Let It Be. This song has very deep personal meaning for me, and I was so afraid someone would fuck it up.

Brooke didn’t fuck it up. She did the song justice. I loved it.

I also have to mention the shoes. I was completely charmed that she was up there on stage barefoot because she can’t play the piano with her shoes on. I don’t drive with my shoes on, so I completely understand the whole bare-feet-on-pedals thing. I also loved that when Ryan brought her her shoes, Simon started scolding him and telling him to “give them back, they’re hers.” Hee!

David Hernandez - I Saw Her Standing There
Meh. He’s becoming forgettable again. Randy and Paula thought it was overdone, and Simon thought “it was corny, verging on desperate.” I just thought it was… boring.

Amanda Overmyer - You Can’t Do That
I thought she sounded really good tonight. Simon said she’s a breath of fresh air but she still wasn’t as good as last week. I thought she did a great job.

Michael Johns - Across The Universe
*yawn*
I still like his voice, but every week I’m less impressed with him. I thought it was boring, and so did the judges (Randy said it was sleepy, Simon said it was monotonous. I forget was Paula said).

Kristy Lee Cook - Eight Days A Week
Oh. My. God. What a freaking trainwreck. She did a countrified version of the song. Which could have worked, but so, so didn’t. I thought her voice wasn’t too bad; she faltered here and there, but basically her vocals weren't awful. The arrangement was terrible. Randy thought the complete opposite: the vocals were awful and the arrangement was good. Honestly, I can’t believe that anyone with ears would think that arrangement was good. Paula, who rarely says anything negative, said “I didn’t enjoy it” which made me almost fall off the couch in shock. Simon said it was horrendous and that it sounded like Dolly Parton on helium. He also said it was a very brave but probably a very foolish thing to do, and I have to agree. She’s probably gone tomorrow night.

David Archuleta - We Can Work It Out
He did the Stevie Wonder version. It was… okay. It was nice to see him do something upbeat for a change, since he’s been doing ballads for the past few weeks. I’m not a huge fan of this version of the song (I definitely prefer the original) but his vocals were good.

I do find it interesting that the judges all gave him negative feedback tonight. They never do that, and yet Paula almost made me fall off my couch for the second time tonight when she said “Not your best week.” Simon said “it was a mess” and that it was David’s “weakest performance.”

Should go home: Kristy Lee Cook
