Now for a comment ficlet, since the crack doesn't stop at 0-early-thirty in the morning.

It was late when Vala found Daniel working on some Ancient text in his office. She sauntered over to his desk and sat down on it.

“Daniel...” she drawled out, toying with some artifact.

“Vala, what do you want now?” he asked distractedly as he continued to read and make notes.

“You speak most Earth languages, right?”

“Yes.”

“What does ‘Ta ma de’ mean?”

“Dammit,” Daniel said flatly without looking up.

“Huh? What’s wrong?” Vala craned her neck to glance at the text.

“What? Oh, nothing’s wrong. That’s what that phrase means, ‘dammit’. It’s Chinese.” Daniel finally looked up at her, perplexed.

“Thanks!” Vala patted him on his shoulder before bounding out of his office.

Daniel shook his head and went back to translating the text.

Twenty minutes later Vala reappeared in Daniel’s office.

“Ni ta ma de. Tianxia suoyou de ren. Dou gaisi,” Vala said without preamble as she sat on his desk again.

Daniel looked at her, his text forgotten for the moment.

“Your inflection is terrible. It means something like ‘Damn you. Everyone under the heavens deserves death.’ It’s not something that can be translated exactly,” Daniel looked at Vala with a combination of amusement and annoyance. “Why do you want to know?”

“I discovered this website that sells DVDs and it’s pretty amazing. Did you know it is able to recommend DVDs I’ll like based on what I buy and what I look at?”

“Let me guess, Amazon dot com?” he sighed as he removed his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“So you know about it?”

“Vala, everyone knows about that site. You’re buying everything it recommends for you, aren’t you?”

“Not everything...” she trailed off as she left his office again. “Just most things.”

Vala smiled as she heard Daniel bang his head on his desk.
