Been a busy few days. This Monday a UK MP, Nadine Dorries, appeared on national television to talk about her agenda for introducing girls only abstinence sex education into schools. To be clear, as a teacher, I can confirm that both sexes receive plenty of advice on waiting until they are emotionally ready and the legal age limit, and what she is ( Read more... )

yeah, it has really unpleasant connotations for me having studied the history of it while looking at Freud. I think there is a difference between advising against knee-jerk reactions and dismissing all emotional responses as hysteria. Not that I think my response has been particularly emotional - there has been plenty of emotion in the comments to the petition but how can that not be valid when it is people giving voice to their own experiences? I think I have been clear from the start that my views are mainly grounded in my experiences as an educator rather than someone who has suffered abuse.

I suppose I have had a bit of a coming out of the political closet in the last year since the coaltion came in - I have always had strong political views but I have been increasingly giving voice to them, and facebook for me is a platform where I can communicate these, where in the past I suppose I have been more talking about my children and so on (although people complain about that too). I don't mind anyone disagreeing with me but there have been occasions where I have felt somewhat patronised in the way it has been done - for example a couple of months back where I posted disgust at miracle babies being put on the table for discussion over value for money in the NHS cuts my cousin took the opportunity to tell me about how lucky people are not to be in the postion of a doctor having to make the life support decision, which was not something I had voiced an opinion on either way. When I explained that my anger was over the money aspect of the decision and I wasn't in any way commenting on the delicate (a word that seems to be used a lot to imply my views trample over sensitive ethical reasoning) moral dilemma of the decision itself I just got more of the same.
