Prologue, "Counting to Five Thousand"

This is the Prologue to my WIP story (which will probably be finished within a week), "Counting to Five Thousand".  The story is based on a conversatoin I had with ChreeChree of SIYE about Harry's decision to leave Ginny behind and her acceptance of that decision.  While this chapter is pretty tame, there are some pretty painful things later on.  ( Read more... )

I've commented on this at SIYE, but I do love this prologue-it's angsty and suspense-filled in its own right, and sets up the question of the consequences of making the 'right' decision that you explore in the next chapter...

Thanks, AC. Now that I've been forced by circumstances to write some really short chapters a few times, I find that it's much easier to control the "colors" and the "tone" in that medium -- I get to be more economical and precise. In the longer chapters I start to meander...

:-)

Economy is an unattainable but eternally sought-after ideal.

I've found that writing 'drabbles'-hundred word mini-fics-is a wonderful exercise for encouraging... discipline.

I love this prologue too. Everything about it, from the approach of the storm, to a decision waiting to be made. That line, too old to be boys, too young to be men is still my favorite. In all of the HP fan stories I've read, nothing can sum up Harry and Ron any better. The other line, (Ron) had an urge to wrap the baby up in a blanket and protect it from the storm. I think you once said Ron was a little hard for you to write. There is a protective streak in Ron toward Harry. I just loved the way you showed it.

Thanks, Rachel. Yes, Ron is hard for me to write when I try to imagine him the way JKR (in interviews, mostly) describes him. But I'm really grateful that some of the readers, like you, found Ron to be their favorite part of the prologue. Gives me confidence. I'm really glad to have you here participating on this LJ.
