So I've been downloading new episodes of Sci-Fi's new Battlestar Galactica and it may very well be the best television series that I have ever seen. I have been a Star Trek and Star Wars fan in the past, but I was always dissatisfied with the realism of both sci-fi franchises.
By "realism" I don't mean that I am nerdly over-analyzing the physics and what-not of the series. After all, a show about interstellar travel would be pretty fucking boring without the ability to travel much, MUCH faster than light speed. By realism I mean that the shows do not thoroughly work out the characters or the society that they are in.
What makes BSG such an amazing well-written show is that it incorporates the full spectrum of human strengths AND weaknesses with interesting plots and character development that extends over multiple episodes. The show is a study in military life, politics, the attempted genocide of humanity, the brutalities of war, human selflessness and selfishness, and the complexities of power relationships between humans.
The show is like a mix between Star Wars, Terminator, Top Gun, Pearl Harbor, Species, with a tiny bit of Gilligan's Island thrown in too. So get busy and start downloading; the new series begins soon.
