Space, Pirates, Spies and Steampunk!

The first "3 sentence" meme story fragments, which are considerably longer than 3 sentences in most cases, and are in order of striking inspiration. ;-)

Mulder and Krycek in space (for ellensmithee)
Sneaking onboard the Alliance flagship without being caught turned out to be surprisingly easy. Unfortunately, getting to the cargo hold proved unexpectedly challenging, perhaps because none of Mulder's sources had been able to locate a copy of the ship's blueprints. But hey, how hard could it be to find the cargo hold full of illegally detained telepathic sentient plants from Rigel IV. anyway, right?

"You have got to be kidding me," said the treacherous Alliance scumbag, sounding disgusted. "You don't even have a plan!"

"Shut up, Krycek. My plan is to improvise." Mulder gave his captive a smack to the head and dragged him around another corner. They were getting closer, he could feel it.

Vetinari/Vimes pirate AU. (for dragonaph)
There had never been a Pirate Admiral before, and Captain Vimes still wasn't sure how he felt about the idea. In fact, Vimes wasn't even sure of how Vetinari had managed it… It was as if all of the pirate captains who opposed him had somehow conveniently managed to get themselves arrested by the crown, overthrown by mutinous crews, or washed off the edge of the world.

This is near the start of the swashbuckling tale, so as of yet there is no slash - but I imagine that Captain Vimes will find himself strangely unable to decline the Pirate Admiral's polite invitation to dinner, no matter how much he might initially imagine he wants to.

As a bonus, here's a bit that I played with, but couldn't use because the plot refused to work:

The planks underneath his booted feet were worn from countless boots tromping over them, polished as smooth as the steel of a well-oiled cutlass. But there - yes, there was a rut worn by a recoiling canon - and there, a scratch left by a crate dragged by a careless new recruit who hadn't lasted a fortnight. (Captain Vimes had strong opinions on the treatment of "The Eagle-Eye".)

Dean/Krycek in a spy caper (for without_me)
Dean knew he wasn't alone as soon as he eased open the window to the study. The catch was too loose, and there was an almost unnoticable smudge of grime on the windowsill… an unmistakable sign that someone else had preceded him.

Also - if this was the someone else Dean suspected it was - an unmistakable sign that he wanted to announce his presence. The KGB trained its top assassins too well to allow for such basic mistakes.

"So Kinley's selling Russian secrets too?" he murmured as he slid inside the room, the words an almost inaudible reverberation in the still night air.

The husky laugh he got in reply was every bit as subtle, just like the touch of lips that ghosted over the nape of his neck. "He's been a bad, bad boy."

Abe no Seimei and an additional character in a steampunk world (for torch)
Hiromasa's stomach lurched as the zeppelin tilted sharply, drifting to the left as it hit an eddy in the ether. The fortress that dominated the pass was now clearly visible, a smooth, blocky stretch of light grey against the rougher, darker shades of the mountain.

"Interesting," murmured Abe no Seimei as he adjusted his binoculars. The wind out on the viewing platform was whipping his scarf wildly about his body, but somehow entirely failed to dislodge his tall, rakishly angled top hat. "Why build a fortress here, of all places?"

"I - uhm." It was probably a rhetorical question, but Hiromasa seized on it anyway as a welcome means of distraction. "I guess he wants to guard the pass? Since airships can't navigate the ether drifts beyond this point, the only access is by ground."

In answer, he received a pleased, wicked almost-smirk, the familiar expression that said Seimei knew a truly delightful secret, and couldn't wait to make Hiromasa discover it. "Perhaps that's true for other people, my friend, but hardly for us. You do remember the one-man flying apparati I've been working on, don't you?"

Stay tuned for more! I'm also still taking prompts, because I'm crazy that way. ;-)
