X-Men: First Class - The Dilemma

Dec 22, 2011 22:32

I've been reading X-Men: First Class slash lately. I'm a bit out of the loop, but it seems like this is the latest boom fandom, correct? And I have to say - yes. I get it. Very much so ( Read more... )

What exactly do you expect to hate with a passion? i.e. which things/Hollywood?

Do you know Magneto's backstory? It's actually potentially very interesting, and I've read fanfic that handled it incredibly well - but to be honest, I don't expect this kind of Hollywood movie to make anything but a painfully gimmicky, horrible hash of it.

But that's already been in the early movies, no? That's why I was asking; I had some issues with the film but the Nazi parts I found very inoffensive. (If you accept that the Nazis have any business in that sort of narrative/movie at all.)

It was in the earlier movies, but only as very brief mentions, as far as I remember - I only watched the first movie though, and might have been asleep during some parts of it, so. ;-) As I understood it, it's more of a major theme here.

Yeah, that's the problem, that this kind of movie isn't equipped to deal with themes like that in a way I would consider even vaguely appropriate (and thus not rage-inducing). But I am aware most people are more willing to shrug and go with it than I am...

I try to deal with my Opinions and Issues by staying away from triggers. Hence my hesitation regarding this movie.

Yeah, the one X-Men movie I've seen so far, I did find dull... but it didn't focus on Magneto's backstory. Which is definitely interesting, but has to be well-handled imo - and that's not something I foresee happening in this movie. I'd risk the dullness without much worry. ;-)

I generally try to not know anything about actors. It makes liking characters easier.

Vampire Diaries...? What's gross?

Urgh. Yeah, that is disgusting; it'd definitely give me trouble, too. This kind of thing is the reason I really try to stay away from interviews. It's bad enough when the actors are just dumb, or have a Totally Wrong View of the characters. But this...

XM:FC is actually a new fandom for me as well. I rather enjoy it. It's active and the fandom seems pretty sane and nice overall ( ... )

So far, I haven't dipped my toes in the fandom pool itself yet - I've just been sampling the fanfic (rather extensively, truth be told *g*). But it's very good to know the fandom is a sane one!

It's also in the DVD commentaries that the actors, script writers and director saw Erik/Charles as essentially a romance between two men. They cut out the Charles/Moira romance to be able to focus on the making and breaking of the Erik/Charles relationship. How cool! I'd inadvertently read about the cut Charles/Moira scenes, AND the fact the actors considered that Charles/Erik had to be a romance to explain their behavior - this is cool, because I'd theorized that the cut scenes were to increase the importance of the m/m relationship. If you ever decide to watch the movie, the reason to see it is because of the chemistry between James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Everything else is just a side dish.

When director Matthew Vaughn cast the role of Erik, he made James read opposite of everyone who they were seriously considering for the role. When James asked him why, Matthew said, "Because I'm not casting a role, I'm casting a chemistry."

Here's some Jame McAvoy quotes on the movie:

"It's kind of a love story, like 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', which, really, was a love story between two men,"

"This is the first time in their lives they've met someone who is an equal of sorts, someone who understands them and can connect and push them too. Especially Charles, he's fascinated with Erik and his potential. For Erik, Charles is the first person he's trusted to really tell about his past and the first person to understand the horrible things he's been through." Taken from: http ( ... )

Yikes, sexism... and it doesn't really help that I rather expect movies of this kind to be sexist. That doesn't make it better, in the end.

Thank you for all the quotes! :-) I usually stay away from author commentary (and any info about authors in general, for that matetr) because often, it tends to interfere with my enjoyment of the characters. But in this case, it's nice! Although I do think he shouldn't have been so definitive on the fact their manly love was never consummated.

You have a point, the movie maybe wasn´t that good, but I have never thought about that pairing either so maybe watching it with that thought in mind wight me different,

The story has some loops tho, comparing with the previous movies, there are some things that don´t match at all, like their "fight" timing, in the third at the beginning it was like they were still friends when they found "Jean Gray", dunno it was kinda weird, I won´t recomend it seeing it if you are afraid of that but it´s really cool, the whole story, the special effects and the characters are interesting, it´s how it all began so it´s kinda cool^^

Anyway dunno what more I can say but hope I helped with my opinion!^_^

You watched the movie, but the Erik/Charles pairing didn't occur to you? Hmm... interesting. So far I've heard that it pretty much jumps off the screen, which is the best thing about the movie, but hey. ;-)

Eeeek, Jean Gray... I'd hoped she wouldn't be in it. What a vain hope, huh? (This may be unfair, but I only remember her as the most incredibly boring Mary Sue of all times, in whatever X-Men movie it was I'm thinking of.)

Thanks for your opinion! :-) I'll think the matter over some more, and maybe just jump to those bits of the movie that are potentially interesting for me.

hahahaha now that u mention u r totally right! It was quite obvious, but somehow coz I´ve been only in the JE fandom it´s hard for me to see much fan service, only with the gay couple in "Modern Family" and maybe the "Windchesters" brothers but that´s wayyyyyyyy obvious! hahahahaha

I know what u mean I never liked Jean Gray either^^

I bet there are some Youtube videos about them^_^Maybe you can just watch those too^_^
