YMMV: The Flash and The Iris Situation

Feb 11, 2017 15:46

So, I am finally watching The Flash - only about 3 years after everyone else. :-) It took me this long because I watched the first ep when the series started, and, well. Did not think it was promising. But since everyone else seems to be enjoying the series so much, I figured it must get better, and have given it another try! I started with ep2 ( Read more... )

It all will be resolved at the end of season 1, as far as I remember. She will get a more active role and be a proper part of the team then. Romantic things are kept to alternative universes, the like.

That sounds more hopeful than I had feared! Thank you for letting me know - it does help somewhat. :-) The prospect of Barry actually stopping the horrible, grating pining and an actual friendship being shown between him and Iris will let me hang in there with greater confidence...

I guess they had to do the old "kept in the dark" plot as it is such a big part of superhero stuff

It's definitely a time-honored tradition, but I really feel like it's a tradition that no longer works and should be dispensed with. Particularly because I struggle to remember a single instance of "kept in the dark for your own good" that applied to a man, which makes it even more infuriating to me for not only being idiotically counter-productive, but also being grounded in a patronizing male stance that should really be obsolete in this day and age.

(I have strong opinions about dumb narrative cliches repeated without thought. Sorry... It's an anti-button. *g*)

Did you ever watch "Lois & Clark"?

Not yet, though I have heard a lot of good things about it, particularly because of the well-developed, true and equal partnership you describe. I keep meaning to pick that series up one of these years!

Happy to help! And I would be interested to read your thoughts once you have reached that part.
Of course, this being an ongoing series, I have no idea what their endgame is. We'll have to wait and see. I don't know much about Flash but it seems Barry and Iris are like Lois and Clark, yes? So in making her his "sister" they torpedoed the relationship from the start?

In "Arrow", even though Oliver and Laurel are the iconic couple, they changed that from canon because of the actors not having any chemistry. So, in the end, we never know what may happen. Otherwise it would be too predictable I guess.

As you may have noticed I recently fell into the "Gotham" world. Coming from the "Arrow" universe, it's interesting how similiar and different the two shows are. I must say I have grown a bit tired of the endless team warehouse quick hand-to-hand combats and am happy to see some good old shooting instead ;) Also I am reading old forum threads and it is interesting to see how Batman fans complain about all the things they do differently. Like, actually Jim and Barbara should have a daughter which becomes Batgirl one day, but they are split up for a while now and it does not look like if they ever will come together again.

All I am saying, it is their universe and sandbox to play in, and it is most interesting and different.

As for "Lois & Clark", a warning, as you are likely to start at the beginning. The first season does not yet show the potential. It is in there somewhere, but something is off. They switched the team, writers, producer etc. between season 1 and 2, got rid of an annoying character and from there on it was awesome. So hang in there during season 1, or just start at season 2 and watch number 1 later. I love them all dearly, particularly Perry White which was such a nice boss. And the whole Daily Planet set. And Clark's apartment. And Clark's parents, which are both alive in this universe and just lovely and proud of their son. You can see why he turned out the way he is, because of what they taught him and how they raised him.

It's one of those series where you end watching each episode with a huge smile on your face as it is all so sweet and lovely and heartwarming and uplifting. The world could be a better place if we all were a little like that.

And the focus is really the relationship. The "bad guys" are so ridiculously over the top, and great fun to watch. But there is a reason why it is called "Lois & Clark" and not "Superman". I used to have a crush on Dean Cain at the time also ;) And him and Teri Hatcher also have real great chemistry. This Lois definitely is not a damsel in distress, she goes out there where the story is and is standing up her own. Very modern woman, especially for the Nineties! I'm sure you'll love it. Let's talk about it when you watch it!
