5. Take the hint.
‘Message from Jack
I had an amazing night and I really
didn’t want it to end like that.
I’m sorry xx’
Ianto ran back into his building. The rain had started falling heavily again and just walking from the car park to the entrance of the block of flats had soaked him head to toe. He tiredly climbed the stairs to the fifth floor, hoping the walk would dry him by the time he reached the top. His shopping bag bumped painfully against his legs which would leave a bruise. After fishing his keys from his pocket and entering his flat he put the bag down onto the kitchen table with a sigh. He felt uncomfortable under his soggy coat, he pulled it off of his shoulders and went to hang it in the hallway to dry. Ianto stopped. He hadn’t noticed when he had come in but as he was going back to the coat peg he saw the person sitting in his front room on his sofa.
“What are you doing?” he asked quietly. He kept his distance from the person by standing in the hallway. Jack had been watching him all the time, waiting in the dimly lit room.
“You weren’t in work today, I was worried,” he replied with some concern.
“I told Toshiko to pass on a message to you,” Ianto said.
“And she did,” Jack said a little louder as Ianto disappeared from the door to hang up his coat. He came back and this time walked further into the room. “It would have just been easier if you had told me yourself,” Jack continued.
“I didn’t think that was a good idea.” Ianto slumped himself on the armchair on the other side of the room. “What’s that?” he pointed to some unfamiliar packages on his coffee table.
“It’s a peace offering,” Jack said pushing them to Ianto who lent forward and peered into the bag.
“You think a doughnut and a coffee is enough for last night?”
“I thought it would be a start.” Jack hoped.
Ianto sighed and fell back into his seat, ignoring the pastries in the bag. He rubbed his temple softly whilst no one spoke in the awkward silence.
“So, are you going to talk to me or are all of our conversations going to be carried out through Toshiko from now on?” Jack asked.
“I don’t have time for this now Jack, you shouldn’t have come here. I’ll be back in work tomorrow. Make sure you close the door after you go please.” Ianto got up quickly from his seat and made for the door. Jack had risen too and grabbed his arm to stop him from leaving.
“I’m here now and you need to tell me what’s going on. Sit.” He tugged on Ianto’s arm and made him sit on the sofa next to him.
Ianto sighed. “For starters I don’t appreciate you entering my flat without my permission. That key was meant for emergencies.” He didn’t pause long enough for Jack to argue that this was an emergency; he wasn’t going to give him that. “And this thing is not really that big a deal, not for you anyway.”
“Say it; tell me what you want me to do. I’m listening.” Jack folded his arms and lent back into the sofa, watching Ianto carefully.
“You want me to just simply tell you what I want?”
Jack nodded.
“Okay,” Ianto began. “I want you to stay. I want you to stay in this flat with me all night.”
“Is that it?” Jack sounded surprised.
Ianto nodded. “But the thing is; you don’t want to.”
“Hey,” Jack protested, holding up his hands. “How do you know that’s not what I want?”
“Well, since you always leave me afterwards I assumed you had better things to do.”
Jack frowned. “That’s not true. I never have better things than you to do,” then he smiled widely. Ianto rolled his eyes which only increased the grin.
“So why don’t you ever stay?” Ianto asked.
“Because I didn’t think that was what you wanted,” Jack explained. Ianto huffed out a breath then hit Jack with the nearest cushion.
“Ow!” Jack shouted out and rubbed his upper body which had just been whacked by an unusually hard cushion.
“You idiot,” Ianto smiled slightly.
“It’s not like you said anything.”
“Jack, you really need to know that not everything is said out right,” Ianto said and he padded out his crushed cushion and put it neatly back into place. Jack only watched and smiled.
“And you need to know that I’m never good at taking the hint, I thought you of all people already knew that.”
Ianto shook his head and scooted across the sofa; he took Jack’s head between his hands and kissed him hard. “Take the hint Jack,” he said when he pulled away. “I want you to stay here, with me, all night. No interruptions and no running back to the Hub or where ever you go when you leave.”
“For the record, I was being a gentleman and waiting for the right time.” Jack stood up from the sofa. “Come on then,” he said holding out his hand. Ianto grinned as he was pulled to his feet. “I think I have some making up to do.”
Ianto nodded. “I think you do.” He let Jack pull him into a deep kiss which lasted until Ianto was too breathless to continue; Jack didn’t give him time to get his breath back and led him to the bedroom.

Ianto woke sometime later. He wasn’t sure how long he had been asleep but tonight had definitely been exhausting. Jack had wanted to make it up to him but in all honesty Ianto didn’t care how many times they did it, all he wanted was to wake up with Jack next to him.
However, Ianto wasn’t going to lie, last night had been amazing. The last thing he remembered was being kissed gently on the forehead and held until he fell into a deep sleep.
He felt Jack’s arm tug around his stomach and draw him in closer. Ianto slowly wriggled so he was chest to chest with his sleeping Captain and he watched him, his breathing was steady and face relaxed. He wanted so much to lean forward and kiss him but that would only bring him out of his sleepy state and Ianto was quite content in just watching Jack be like that.
This is what Ianto had been waiting for and he loved every second of it.
