Prologue

Jack was still sat behind his desk. It was early morning, the Hub was dark and it creaked in the cold atmosphere. He’d been sat here since Ianto had left. He half felt that Ianto might have changed his mind and come back. But he didn’t. Jack didn’t understand Ianto’s sudden change of heart. The first time they had kissed, the first time Ianto had actually been conscious during the kiss, was not going to be the first and only time Jack thought. Maybe he was wrong and their moment of passion was just in the heat of the moment but he really thought that his feelings were being reciprocated by Ianto. Plus it was Ianto who had started it.

“Jack it’s heading your way!” Gwen shouted down the comms.

Jack peeked around the corner of the wall; he could see the shadow creeping down the wall at the far end. It was getting closer to his and Ianto’s hiding place. He felt a hand grab his sleeve and tug it slightly.

“Can you see it?” Ianto asked nervously. Jack fell back onto the wall. He nodded.

“What’re we going to do? There’s no exit down here.”

Jack thought for a moment. He had no idea.

“It might change its direction,” he said.

“You don’t know what to do, do you?” Ianto whispered.

“Well… no not really.”

“Brilliant,” Ianto said sarcastically and moved further back into the wall.

The noise of the creature’s breaths was drawing in closer. A cold draft blew past the two men who were frozen against the wall.

“We could just jump out and shoot it,” Jack suggested. He looked at Ianto.

“We have no idea what it is and you want to just ‘jump out and shoot it’. I’m not one for the idea of an all you can eat buffet when I’m on the menu.”

“Fair point,” Jack said. “Gwen? Owen?” He whispered down his comms. There was no reply. “Damn it, signals gone.”

“Looks like we’re all alone then. Come on Captain you must be able to think of something.”

Jack thought again. He hated being in this impossible situation. He had dragged his team into this without even thinking what could happen. He didn’t figure out what they were fighting until it was too late, and they still had no idea. The noise had stopped.

“Can you hear anything?” He asked Ianto. Ianto listened; he didn’t hear the breathing or rustling of footsteps anymore.

“No. Maybe you were right; maybe it has gone another way.”

Jack crept towards the edge of the wall again. He carefully and slowly peered around the corner and stared around and down the open space. The angry breath sounded. It made Jack suddenly leap back and fall into Ianto who had followed him to the edge of the wall. Ianto pulled him round to stop him from falling on the floor so Jack ended up standing in front of him.

Ianto kept an eye on the edge of the wall. “Is it there?” he turned back to Jack who nodded at him.

“It’s close. Stay quiet. It might not sense us if we don’t move or speak.”

Ianto nodded quietly in agreement and kept still. Jack didn’t move either; he kept in front of Ianto, their bodies close. Ianto looked back to the edge of the wall when he heard the echoes of the breaths drawing in. He turned back to Jack and they stared at each other. This was close, in more ways than one. There was the creature that could kill them in seconds or savor them for a long painful death prowling just a few meters away from them. And there was Jack who was stood incredibly close; he could feel his increased breath on his face and he could see the nervous expression in his eyes. However he felt protected having Jack there. This really wasn’t the time but it felt so right, Ianto lent into Jack and kissed him on the lips. Jack soon started to kiss him back after realising what Ianto was doing to him. Ianto pulled on the sides of Jacks coat which drew him in closer. He felt Jacks body against his, feeling more protected and the thought of the creature drifted from his mind. Jack was unsure of the reasons for Ianto kissing him right now but he felt that it felt right and he began to move his hands onto Ianto’s waist to keep him close and he pushed him back into the wall behind him, he also forgot about the danger they were actually in.

Bang!

“Jack?! Ianto?!” Gwen shouted and she appeared around the corner to find the two of them standing with their backs against the wall. “You two OK?” she asked.

“Fine, we’re fine,” Jack replied with a nod.

“Owen shot it,” Gwen explained. “Want to take a look, its bleeding green blood, rather gross actually.” She wrinkled her nose as the smell of the creature perfumed through the atmosphere. “And it stinks.”

Jack smiled and breathed out a laugh through his nose. Gwen walked away; he turned back to Ianto who was straightening out his coat. They smiled at each other before following Gwen around the corner to find the dying corpse of the creature decaying on the floor.
