I spent today working with volunteers, time I've now earned off in the future. Next weekend I'll probably check out Carnaval in the city Saturday and (if I can find a place to stay) Sunday too. I originally thought I'd like to tackle the (drumroll) Lost Coast, but it seems to be such a large area that I might save up some time off and make my own Memorial Day weekend later on in the summer.

So it was a pretty packed day. I met a Lithuanian German in his 60s named Victor, who really really enjoyed talking about Germans (I wonder if he'd be voting Nationalist in Germany today...) but was a very nice and entertaining guy. He had a movie-foreigner way of talking: spoke English very well, but with a clear accent, and would never say "Yes" but always "Ja." Then, I felled a tree, which decided not to go where I was hoping but straight down at me. First time that's happened, and things could've gone a lot worse, but I'd like for that never to happen again. There were tons of black caterpillars (tons as in dozens on every bush), some of them in various stages of cocooning. I smoked a cigarette because I've wanted the taste of tobacco, for some reason (and I tend to light up whenever I've almost been killed in the woods for whatever reason). Overheard some landed monied Californians discussing things like they do - real estate and money, mostly - and found myself very irritated when hearing them talk about buying property in other Western states, specifically Portland, with the intention of course of making them into California homes.

Other than that, I've been meaning to make spinach pie but routinely forget to take the phyllo dough out of the freezer. There's an incredibly attractive girl with a fairly unattractive guy walking around right now, which both irritates me and is also encouraging. I'd kind of like to while tonight away in some bar, but being a half hour drive away on winding roads doesnt make me too keen on driving back home.
