Oh, by gosh, by golly
It's time for mistletoe and holly
Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents
Countrysides covered with snow
Oh, by gosh, by jingle
It's time for carols and Kris Kringle
Overeating, merry greetings
From relatives you don't know
Then comes that big night,
Giving the tree the trim
You'll hear voices by starlight
Singing a Yuletide hymn
Oh, by gosh, by golly
It's time for mistletoe and holly
Fancy ties an' granny's pies
An' folks stealin' a kiss or two
As they whisper, "Merry Christmas" to you
Gah! It's that time of year again and needless to say. it's been on my mind. *grins* I LOVE the holiday season. See, I don't exactly celebrate any of those religious shinanigans so.... I just kinda refer to it as a holiday season. All of december. :D This isn't so much a problem as lots of my friends are varied in culture and religious practices. I've celebrated a night of Chanukah with friends as a little girl, I've been to more than a few RC Christmases and I've celebrated Yule with friends as a teenager.
But you see, it doesn't matter to me what practice we're actually celebrating, cause it's a season of giving and sharing, working together as a community. We don't NEED a religious reason but think about it, back in the day, this would be the point, as a settler or out in the wild world, that you'd need to share with your neighbours to make it through the winter to the spring. It's not nessecarily a religious thing but tying them in can certainly boost one's faith I suppose.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is, when my monster IS big enough to understand, what should I tell her? "We don't celebrate religion but we still give gifts and eat food and mingle with people in celebration" but... of what? Gah! I've never been a discriminatory person but these things get to me. I guess it's the canadian in me, trying be the peace keeper, even in my own head.
Now, as I've started the entry with one of my FAVORITE holiday tunes, I'll also end with one.
Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say on a bright Hawian Christmas Day
That's the island greeting that we send to you from the land where palm trees sway
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way to say Merry Christmas to you
