Heshima Kenya - Aid to Struggling Refugee Children in Kenya

May 12, 2008 22:44

I can't believe I neglected to post this on livejournal . . . but here goes.

Orphaned and separated refugee children are considered the most vulnerable population in the world and over 3,000 are living in Kenya. Classified by human rights organizations as “unaccompanied,” most of these children have fled from persecution in the nearby countries of Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their families have been killed or have disappeared in the conflicts that caused them to flee. Others were abandoned or separated from their families when they crossed the border to safety.

Heshima Kenya is the first and only organization in Kenya to provide programs exclusively for unaccompanied refugee children in Nairobi and aspires to become a new model for foster care in the region.

Anne, a friend who also happens to be my boyfriend's sister, is starting this Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). She has lived in Africa for almost ten years and is currently championing the cause of refugee children in Kenya. Her organization, Heshima Kenya, believes all children deserve a safe environment where they can develop and thrive with peace and integrity.

I'm currently helping Anne with overall publicity outreach for Heshima Kenya's upcoming fundraiser at the famous Funky Buddha Lounge. As part of that publicity, I want to bring my own friends, acquaintances, and colleagues into the fold. That includes livejournal friends. :-)

Please come out to learn more and support Heshima Kenya's innovative shelter, education and community outreach programs for abandoned and orphaned refugee children in Nairobi, Kenya.

Place: Funky Buddha Lounge at 728 W. Grand Ave. in Chicago
Date: Friday, May 30, 2008
Time: 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Suggested donation: $30 that includes some beer (for those on the guest list), appetizers, live traditional Ethiopian music, cash bar and raffle prizes!!!
Event is 21+.

One thing I really value about this cause is that, based on how hard and thanklessly Anne has been working, I KNOW that all money donated WILL be used to directly benefit relief programs in Nairobi, Kenya. You really can't say that about all charities and NGOs.

You can donate online or at the door. For online donations, please visit heshimakenya.org, click on the Network for Good button and write "Funky Buddha" in the designation field.

For more information about this exciting new NGO, please visit the website:
http://www.heshimakenya.org

Please send me your name at the email address listed on my profile if you plan to attend the fundraiser, so I can add you to the guest list for those who will be served beer as part of the donation cost. You can also RSVP at the newly-opened RSVP listing listed on the poster. Feel free to bring a friend or twenty of 'em--just give me their names beforehand if they want to be served beer.

Please join the movement to empower vulnerable refugee children. This is really a chance to be part of something great. SPREAD THE WORD so that this night may be a success!
