First Day on the Job

Dec 11, 2006 19:19

I didn't get a lot of sleep last night. I was excited about starting, so it took me a while to even get tired. Then, despite wearing earplugs to bed, I heard the new people in the apartment above me moving around (walking, opening and closing doors, flushing, etc.)...at 3:30 in the morning.

Okay, I can deal with that. The last people who lived there got up at 3 as well. And at least so far they haven't been playing loud music. We've just heard "living" noises of them walking around.

However, at 4 am? Despite wearing earplugs, I could clearly hear what sounded like them hammering nails into the wall as though they were hanging pictures. Only that wall is mostly window. Something one was getting "nailed" all right. Argh.

But work was GREAT. I really think I'm going to like it there! The description of what I'll be doing is exciting to me (And BONUS, the "customers" I'll be working with are INTERNAL "customers" not people I have to sell to), the people seem really nice, the environment is just GREAT, and...I have a cube! Okay, I'm sharing it with my boss-type-manager-guy, but still, it's a cube with desk and bulletin board and white board space that I'll be able to decorate and call my own little place! Well, I will once I can move the boxes of swag that are being stored there to some other "storage" space.

And as for swag, I was given a Shadowman baseball cap and a red felt fedora. I'm leaving the fedora in my cube, but I had to wear my baseball cap home. YAY SWAG! Must get more swag...

I also have my first EVAR cool ID badge and clip that gets me through all the doors, and even gets me into the parking deck. The picture is kind of shitty, but I expected that much. OF COURSE I couldn't get a haircut appointment for this past weekend. But at least my boss-type-manager-guy said that he won't call up the facilities guy (who does the badges and stuff) to take my picture for the cube farm "endcaps" (so people can find you) until next week since I did get a hair appointment for this coming weekend.

Okay, this all sounds really cheesy to be excited over, but it sure as hell beats the retail environment I was in where we had one office with two desks, and I shared that second desk with basically everybody so you never had a little personal space. Your ID badge said your name and title and insinuated "How may I serve you?" as though we were slaves (and we were) to the rich bitches who had nothing better to do with their time and money and got their jollies from making your life a hell because you're "beneath" them.

RAWR, but those days are over, I SWEAR!

I'm sure the excitement will wear off after a while, but for now, I'm enjoying it. It really does feel like I've finally "come home" to something I've worked hard for and to where I belong.
