Animazement

May 28, 2006 01:57

Oy, I'm tired! But I want to post up something about Animazement while it's still fresh in my mind. Remember, this is my first con ever, and it's obviously quite different from the Ren Faire scene. But I had a good time.

Thoughts about the weekend so far... )

.hack//legend of twilight is what got me into .hack//sign. I'm partial to the manga though, which is all the cute without the annoyance.

I think there's the issue of once you get comfortable with one style, swtiching just throws you off. Kind of like watching dubs vs. subs. If you get used to the voices for the dubs, it's hard to watch the subs and vice versa. I mean, I can't imagine Vash without Johnny Young Bosh's voice. So going from serious to (comparatively) super chibi just threw me off and I couldn't warm up to it. And I really like the characters from .hack//sign so not having them there was just...didn't work for me. Granted, they weren't in Roots either, but at least the style was similar so it was like being back in a comfort zone.

Maybe the manga for Legend of the Twilight would be a better way to get the story without all the annoyance. I'll check it out. Because I DO want to find out what happened.

The endings are completely different anyway. The anime had all of this over-dramatized, end of world crap that I couldn't even follow. The managa was just about trying to return Aura's lost daughter to her or some such. It's been a long time since I read those, but I own them all.

I've been to a few conventions over the years. They never seem to live up to my expectations. The first convention that I ever attended was the Dungeons and Dragons GENCON in Geneva, WI back in the late '80s. Huge affair, but, I don't know, it wasn't as fun as just playing the game with friends.

It was definitely better than my expectations, and I know that comparing a con to a Ren Faire is like comparing apples and cinder blocks. It's just a matter of what experiences I have had versus this big unknown to me. Typical human nature or something to try to form some sort of comparisons.

Yes, there's a huge difference between enjoying the interest with friends or a small group and trying to enjoy it at a con. So what I tried to get out of it was seeing the costumes as a way to further expand my interest, see cartoons I haven't seen before, sit in on panels to learn a few things, and watch the big shows (like Anime Hell) as an enjoyable diversion that I can't see anywhere else. So the good news is that I got out of it pretty much what I hoped to get.

Of course, to paraphrase the movie Clerks: "I hate people, but I love gatherings...."

An enjoyable weekend, overall.

I hope in the future I have a little boy and a little girl. When they're about 9-ish, I will SO totally dress them up as Radical Edward and Little Slugger and let them cause havoc (okay, within reason...a controlled chaos) at the con.
I'll lend you a kid anytime. Just ask.

Dylan could pull off the look, but the thought of putting him on rollerblades and handing him a bent baseball bat frightens even me.

Of course, the name of the anime IS "Paranoia Agent."

That reminds me of the role playing game "Paranoia." It came out in the mid 80s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranoia_(role-playing_game)

Hi, hope you don't mind my reading - I saw the link on your site ^_^
I am also insanely jealous of your getting to go! I'm dying to go to A-kon coming up in Dallas, but I've got no transportation! Heh. Anyway, would you mind if I added you?

Yah sure! Welcome!

I hope you can find transportation. Everyone deserves a trip like that every so often to maintain their sanity. =)
