K/S and Shatnoy recs
I spend most of my days arguing with Anvil, one of my officemates. This would be a good thing if I meant 'argue' in the sense of 'have a heated discussion from opposing viewpoints,' because I enjoy those. Alas, arguments with him tend to involve my saying something and his replying 'Uh, no, you're wrong.' This gets annoying when I actually want to know why I'm wrong (this happens occasionally, so I'm told).
Today's was a case in point, because this has been bugging me for ages and I want to know what I'm missing.
So, in Stargate, you dial another Stargate by inputting a sequence of seven symbols. The first six of these are supposed to represent the destination, and the final one the point of origin. The way this is explained in the series (SG-1, at least, I didn't get very far with Atlantis and haven't started on Universe) is that the first six represent three lines - two points being required to define each line - and that the intersection of these three lines is the destination point.
Where I get stuck is that you do not define a point in three-dimensional space using three lines. You need three planes, and in order to define a plane you need three points. You would therefore need nine points overall.
You use lines to define a point in two-dimensional space, but then you only need two lines, not three.
Finally, the last symbol also confuses me. If you can define each point of origin uniquely with a single symbol, why all the faffing around with trying to draw lines in space?
I'm not even going to start on only having to add one more symbol to the address in order to reach a whole other galaxy, because at that point my brain explodes.
Any ideas? I tried googling since I was sure someone else must have asked this, but couldn't find anything.
Aaaaaaaanyway, lots of recs today! Why yes, I had a productive weekend.

Had me in tears at one point (okay, we've established by now that that's not hard to do in the movie-era, but even so...) and contains possibly the weirdest sex scene I've ever read.

Academy AU in which Kirk and Spock meet at a Halloween costume party, but not as cracky as that makes it sound. Beautifully subtle mysticism interwoven with a hot, passionate Spock - what more can you ask? :D

In which Kirk is a god and Spock his priest. I'm not generally a fan of this kind of AU, but this one stands out for its hilarity ("No," Jim growled. "No. You have got to be fucking kidding me. They did not. Ban. Sex. In my bible.") and for the alien Vulcan anatomy. Obviously to be avoided if you're offended by blasphemy.

Space pirates! This is a delightful alternate version of how the crew came together, set in a conquering!Vulcans dystopia. Long and fun and satisfying, and delightfully sweet (I swear I will never stop squealing for joy at 'He's not a Vulcan. He's a Spock.').

Spock Prime/Gaila
*** The Orion-on-Vulcan Method by anodyna
(Spock Prime/Gaila) This is amazing. Gaila is recuperating on the Vulcan colony as a guest of Spock Prime. Spock Prime is perfect - you really get the sense that he's out of place in this world - and Gaila is just fantastic. She's a little uncertain and off-balance, but still unrelentingly Gaila. The way the characters are written makes the delevelopment of the relationship not only believable but somehow inevitable.
I've never been into RPS, but I accidentally clicked on a Shatner/Nimoy fic at the weekend. One thing led to another and, well, I've now 'accidentally' read everything in the pairing that I could find. What can I say? It's kind of hard to feel any guilt when Shatner ships himself with Nimoy so shamelessly. Anyway, here are my favourites:
