In a small cramped room in the centre of Acre, a handsome, blond young man was lying on a bed made up with cotton sheets. His was naked, his dignity covered only by a blanket laid across the centre of his body. This body was emblazoned with the signs of war. He was covered in bruises, burns and scars, but the most shocking of these was across his midriff where a scar which was long and deep shimmered in the heat. It was covered by some deep puple balm which gave off a pungent smell. The young man was awake, his keen eyes traversing the chamber as if waiting, waiting for his wound to heal, waiting to be well enough to return to the ones he loved. His waiting was interrupted by an old monk who entered the chamber, pushing through the curtain across the door.
"Well my young knight, let us see how you are progressing." The knight knelt by the bed and prodded the red gash across the young man's stomach. "You are a strong man Carter, your wound is not festering. You should be well enough to travel in a week." Carter smiled broadly.
"It is due to your extraordinary knowledge and care Brother Cornelius. I would not be here were it not for you." The Brother bowed his head to the praise and murmured humbly
"God gave me my skills, young sir, it would be a sin not to use them." He stood up and began washing his hands in a bowl my the bedside. "And it is also not just me you have to thank for the King brought you here himself to be healed. You must be a very important warrior. He will be glad to have you by his side again." Carter grimaced slightly before saying shortly.
"I am not returning to the King." Brother Cornelius who was curious but would not show it merely raised his eyebrows. "I have done my duty" Carter went on, "And I have nearly died for it. It is time to return to England, to my own country which I have sorely missed."
"And is there a family there waiting for you to return?" The grey haired monk asked as he readjusted the sheets on the young knight's bed.
"Not family no," Carter's eyes began to slowly close as tiredness overcame him, "But there is one person whom I have missed... so... much..." As he fell into a light sleep the monk turned to leave and heard Carter whispering..."Much..."
Brother Cornelius shook his head as he let the door curtain fall into place behind him. He imagined that the handsome young knight had some maiden in England whom he could not wait to see and pledge undying love to. He had no idea how wrong, and yet how right he was.
