According to a popular Franciscan preacher, there were three reasons why religious images were introduced into churches: 1) on account of the ignorance of simple people; 2) on account of emotional sluggishness; and 3) images were introduced because many people cannot retain in their memories what they hear, but they do remember if they see images.
