Lloyd Smith, We'll See You Later

Jan 08, 2014 08:03

I write this immediately after learning of the death of old friend and colleague Lloyd Smith, long-time morning show host at WCSS through numerous administrations and owners. I've known his wife Diane even longer, and my heart breaks for her. Theirs has been a most congenial union.

I actually pre-dated Lloyd at WCSS, being a high-school week-end DJ and jack of all trades when he arrived as Chief Engineer and morning drive guy in 1969. As I recall he then drew the princely salary of $110 per week plus an additional ten bucks for putting the garbage out. The warm, boyish charm that he exuded on the air was the same Lloyd in person. His mix of musical selections seemed to break all the rules, but fit nicely with his audience. Having Lloyd around in your kitchen every morning was as comfortable as an old sweater.

I haven't even begun to start missing him, and I miss him already.
