I sat in a fancy shmancy steak house tonight eating filet mignon and australian rock lobster tail. My dinner was ruined by the conversations at all the tables around me. I was bored, being by myself, and was eavesdropping to get a feel for the current midwestern attitudes.

I was very surprised to hear the conversations I did. Parents openly harshing their (not present) kids to other parents. People laughing at the son whose life wasn't going anywhere (he lived in their basement). The discussion on whether or not it was right for one son to be dating a "very" Jewish girl (she went to grammer school in Israel, hence the "very"). These were about the politest thing I heard. Let's not go into the talk about lesbians, blacks, homeless, Mexicans, and everyone else. Let's also not talk about how every parent had something terrible, demeaning, or down rude to say about thier own children!

I was disgusted and so very happy that I could fly back to California tomorrow. We may have our own problems, but we certainly don't live with 1950's attitudes any more. I'd recommend to anyone out there that they "get the hell out of dodge" before it destroys their minds and will. for those that I love, I think a road trip to move you out here is called for before you go nuts.
