since we're on the subject of marriage...
(i know, i haven't written in forever, and that's fine)
i'm working on my research paper on medieval spanish marraige laws and their incorporation (and lack thereof) of friendship values, and i've found two interesting bits of info that i would love to share with you all:
1) the old seven-part code of law put together in medieval spain seems to have condoned a sort of same-sex marriage. it talks about how, in the 9th century, the church would issue services and ceremonies for consecrating/committing two friends to each other for the purpose of child rearing through adoption. although conservatives have rejected the idea of this being an early form of same-sex marriage, i don't really know how it couldn't have been used as such..
2) this is just disgustingly george w. bush-style and funny in that sense. according to this law code, marriage serves four purposes.. of course, none of these have to do with love, they're all more economic or religious motives, but the fourth reason is noteworthy: "The fourth, to avoid quarrels, homicides, insolence, violence, and many other very wrongful acts which would take place on account of women if marriage did not exist."
