Recently, participating in a discussion, in a place with booze, a friend commented on how they felt “common”. We assured them they were far from that... :) BECAUSE...
Mostly due to people “grouping” in similar interests, (clics of sort), living in one’s own small world, one may feel “common” among their peers...
I can say, by thinking I know my friends here, we of like mind, are in fact of a VERY small percentage in the grand scheme of America. True, lots of people are in their own small world, some to more extent than others. However, going off demographic percentages, there are truly a lot more “common minded” persons out there (there actually has to be, in order to be a majority :) )
Okay, America was almost 50% split on who they wanted for the President… THERE!, half of America doesn’t think the country should be ran as you do.
Now beliefs, they state 80% of the country are Christian, if you are NOT, already 80% of America doesn’t believe as you do...
“Intelligence”, (I use this term loosely) According to IQ statistics, only 16% has above 110. Furthermore, only 6.7% above 120, and only 2.2 % above 130. If you fit anywhere above 110+... 85-90% of America isn’t as “smart” as you!
- Now don’t you feel special right now :)
If you further break down interests/beliefs in their percentages, you’ll see only a very small percentage like the same genre of music, clothing, or believe in the same overall values as you do.
(I said that thinking I do in fact know my friends. :)
Okay, if you do watch reality shows, love sitcoms, follow football and the word of Christ religiously... drink Bud Lite and drive your SUV listening to Pop Music while driving to Wal-Mart thinking, “Good thing I voted for GW or those terrorist would have won.”.... GREAT! You have lots of friends out there.
BUT, if you said "NO" to any of the above, you aren’t “common”, or “stereotypical”, or a "majority".
This however, leads to a problem. How can anyone who is as unique as you are, get their way? When this country is ruled by the majority, it’s the issue, candidate, whatever, that gets the vote.
S was asking me about the primary elections, and asked, “What if you don’t want any of those candidates?”... Well........umm.... Exactly.
It seems "the few" always have to make concessions when deciding the good of "our country", ... we always have to choose the lesser-evil candidate in elections. (at least local issues are usually just “yes” or “no”).
I will say, that at least, we are a country of “freedom of speech and beliefs” (kind of).
We can still pretty much do whatever we want, within reason. ... I just wish there was some law that allowed you to do whatever you wanted, AS LONG as it did not interfere/negatively impact someone else.
Sure, do drugs! If it makes you happy! Just don’t rob and steal to get your fix. Be a religious zealot, just don’t try and “convert” me. Too much sex and bad language on TV? Don’t watch it!
Of course there are a lot of gray areas in there.. but I don’t have all the answers. :)
I’m voting “Comet in 2008”. Or maybe for 2012 instead. :)
