Reconstructing Woodland Vegetation and its Exploitation by Past Societies, based on the Analysis and Interpretation of Archaeological Wood Charcoal Macro-Remains
Agouti & Austin 2005
The authors explore several approaches to analyzing charcoal wood deposits recovered from archaeological sites as well as how to approach interpretations. Highlighted are their temporal models for deposition of the charcoal: long term and short term. Short term deposits mean hearths or fire pits, and depending on site type (short term occupational camp, seasonal residence). Short term depositions are easily subject to post de positional disturbances. Long term deposits include middens, whixh reflect a long term use of wood in at a site. Far more useful for identifying long term habitation habits as well as inform on paleoenvironmemt. Really an excellent combination of archaeology and paleoecology.
