Recent Burning of Boreal Forests Exceeds Fire Regime Limits of the Past 10K Years

This paper present fire records using charcoal taken from cores from 14 lakes in the Yukon Territory , Alaska. The goal was to infer fire causes and consequences. Changing dominant vegetation stands meant different fire severity results. The researchers did identify distinct patterns in fire regime change that were congruous with climate and vegetative changes. Higher mid Holocene temperatures meant more fire frequency and greater intensity of biomass burned. The authors attempt to establish a pattern so that effects of current warming will be better understood and anticipated. Interestingly, they found that the current vegetative cover of the region is similar to vegetative cover during the Medieval Cooling Anomaly, which they interpret as meaning that region will burn less currently despite a currently warming climate.
