Summary: It doesn't matter what job they're doing or what murderer she's hunting down this week, they always make time to meet at the same park bench that they said goodbye at.
Notes: For Kate's age, I went with Stana Katic's age, which makes her like a year older than Dean, but that works for this Universe. Also, spoilers for Castle 3.09 - Close Encounters of the Murderous Kind. For Supernatural, it's AU after 5.22 - Swan Song.
Some Things Never Change
She hears them before she sees them. She's lounging comfortably on a park bench when she hears a familiar call of 'jerk' and 'bitch' ring out. She shakes her head at the duo. Dean may be 32 and Sam may be 28, but they're still a pair of 10 year olds on the inside sometimes. Dean spots her first and gives a flirtatious waggle of his eyebrow as a greeting. She laughs and shakes her head at him and he just shrugs, that's just always been their thing. She gets up from the bench when Dean gets closer and pulls him into a hug.
"Awww, did the indomitable Kate Beckett ACTUALLY miss me?" She punches him in the shoulder, but doesn't let go of him, until Sam gets close and then she's pull his hulking figure into a tight hug.
"Hey Kate, so, what was the flavor of murderer this week?" Kate lets go of Sam before answering.
"Well, if you asked Castle, he'd say a cross between FBI and aliens." All three laugh before they plop themselves on the park bench and decide to play catch-up with their lives.
"So, what has your ragged asses back in New York this week?" Dean gives a slightly wicked grin and cuts off his brother before he can give the proper answer.
"Maybe we just wanted to see you. Is that a crime?" Kate rolls her eyes, she hasn't believed a single things that has come out of Dean Winchester's mouth in almost 10 years.
"Coming from you, maybe." Dean pouts, which gets Kate roaring with laughter, because she is fairly certain that she is the only person in the world to manage that. "But seriously, what did you have to save New York from THIS time?" Dean leans back and lets Sam talk about it, cause you can almost see that he's bursting at the brim, wanting to talk about it.
"It was just a coven of vampires, pretty standard really, especially for a city. But Cas and Gabe just went to town on them, especially Gabe." Kate turns her attention back to Dean.
"Cas and Gabe? Angels 1 and 2 are still bumming it around down here?" Dean shrugs.
"Yeah, I guess. I don't mind having them around. Nice added boost to the manpower." Kate smirks slightly at Dean.
"Translation: I like having Cas around because I can touch him. Gabe needs to go and off himself...like now. Did I misread that?" Dean gives her a deadpanned look which has her and Sam in stitches. Taunting Dean has been one of their favored pastimes for whenever they meet up and this time is no different.
"You guys suck, you know that?" Kate shrugs, it's not often that she just gets to let loose and laugh at something. She's always working, always catching killers, so she takes what she can, even if it's at Dean's expense. And he gets that and he lets her, just like any brother would for a sister, and that's how Dean sees Kate, as a sister.
She saved his ass so many times when he had been a freshman at her high school. It had been one of the only times that he had had a friendship outside of his little brother and he had treasured it. Kate had seen beyond his cool, hard exterior and seen the fragile, scared kid that he had been. And she didn't mock him for it. She just smiled and told him that he could sit with her and her friends at lunch. It may have been a random act of kindness, but it grew into a friendship that has lasted all these years.
And Dean did pay her back in a strange sort of way. He taught her about HIS world, about the supernatural, and other things that involved that. And she didn't run the opposite direction screaming. That really said something about her character. So, for a year, she kept him safe from the idiots at their high school and he kept her safe from the things that liked to crawl out of the dark and eat people. Fair trade if you asked them.
So, Dean's just going to sit back and let Kate and Sam nerd out over something, cause that's just how he is, but he hopes that she knows that no matter what happens in their lives, he will always be there for her. Cause that's just how family is.
And family don't end in blood for these guys.
