Alive in Austin

Hi Mimita!! I'm so sorry I didn't got in touch with you before. As you well know, EVERYTHING right now is just CRAZY! We got out of New Orleans on Saturday before Katrina hit the city, and came straight to Austin, to Jonathan's house. We've been here since then. We were allowed to go back to our home this past week, so we went to Baton Rouge, where we spent the night with some friends, and the next morning we headed for Kenner. Our house, miraculously, is in "good" shape (compared to most everyone else's). We got roof damage, the chimney was on the ground, got Patrick's room window blown in (so everything in that room got soaked), the water either went downstairs from there or permeated from the outside and we got wet carpet in my closet and the computer room, fence is all bent, and (the worst of all) the smell from the refrigerator was nauseating! One house across the street from us was hit by a tornado, the whole second floor was on the driveway (only that house in the whole block was hit!). If that is hard to believe, one of the owners' daughters had a GLASS curio full of porcelain figurines and it was INTACT, as well as a deck of cards (not even one card was out of place - they were out of their box)!! We could not believe the damage... there were trees pulled out of the ground EVERYWHERE, a lot of them blocking the streets. And guess what? We are so lucky to live in Kenner, they did restore electricity that day, and we had some water (which we used just to flush the toilets, of course). We could not stay (and didn't want to, either), so we came back to Austin. The dental school is planning on continuing classes in Baton Rouge, but so far they are only talking about faculty and students. I don't know if I'm going to loose my job. The dean said the dental school in New Orleans would open again in January, but who knows what will happen to the city? Pooch, Precious, and Helga are ok, here with us. Patrick will be moving to Columbus, Ohio. He will be studying at the Ohio State University. Jonathan has become famous worldwide, he created the www.scipionus.com website, which has helped thousands of people. It's basically a map where anyone can enter information about the condition of a particular place. He has been interviewed by lots of people, including a TV station and the Austin paper. You can google "scipionus" and you'll see he's in places all over the world. Cool, huh? A couple of good things that came out of this disaster. We could not stop watching the news the first few days after the hurricane hit, and then, we could not take it anymore... So disheartening, so terribly sad, and knowing that so many people were (are?) probably still trapped somewhere in their attics, the poor little animals!! Can't stand thinking of all of it!! We were extremely lucky! And still are, here in the luxury of Jonathan's home, compared to those hundreds of people that have to stay in some "refugee camp" with hundreds of other people, with nothing to do, depending on whatever they are given... Anyway, just wanted to let you that we are ok. My email address: chaykasha@gmail.com Sorry, I could not remember yours. Please write. Love Ya,
