Rob Ford is a canadian tea partyer. His entire election was called respect for taxpayers. Id like toknow how respect means cutting jobs and putting people out of work in a fragile economy. I'd like to know how respect is given when you annouce plans to incite panic. And use voter anger to manipulate the press and people. I just watched a press conference to get some facts because MY MOM. And a friend heard the news wrong. The effect wont come till later. but it can still come. But I and other people wont go down without a fight
Why am I upset? I like my job I work hard. But there are a few days where things aremore lax Its normal if you maintain the property well you have periods whereits not all OMG weeds OMG garbage etc. I dont feel the constant threat of an asshole boss because under my contract I have something workers crave. RIGHTS. My bosses cant discriminate because of race sexual preference or disability or gender. Sure these things are law but who has the money for a lengthy law suitor want to deal with a swamped government agency. Thats what a shop steward does. They cant discriminate against you because they dont like you. Harassment in the city the policy is almost two pages long. The health and safety stuff is paramount. And Yes we have coverage for prescriptions and illness. DO I agree with all union things fuck no but the fundamentals of Worker rights coverage and a job that at least pays enough to scrape by is very important. MY father is an auto worker and it was a union that saved his life. A union that made sure the company would pay for the accident that eventually would lead to his first spinal fusion operation and a second recently. A union helped grant me much needed money to start out my post secondary education. It wasn't a scholarship but a bursary that helped none the less.
Today Rob Ford began the process of contracting OUT jobs that were done by the city for the city. Apparently this will affect 300 jobs but at least 1000-2000 people will be displaced shuffled. Contracting out has historically proven toontarians and canadaians a long time EXPENSE because the contractors just raise the rates and use any method possible to make the dollar . An outsourced service for public gives the public LESS control over their city less control over their services and quality goes down hill.
WHY am I worried. Because I'm a seasonal i work 8 months gardening And usually I work a snow removal gig for winter. The snow removal companies pay peanuts for busting your body to dirt. I Actually was advised to not do it this winter. So moneys tighter then normal. I was nearing the cusp of gaining full time employment. This would mean i was set okay pay medical eye coverage dental plan and life insurance. The horticultral field took A beating recently through mom and pop style landscape companies so willing to hire migrants and students. Which they can pay peanuts for and in the case of a student be subsidized by the federal.
The issue is a clause we have to save jobs. When a position is eliminated that worker with higher seniority can BUMP into lower positions. The bumping protects a guy with 15 years who has kids and a family but recent hires under ten years Aka me face displacement. Just A few bumps set a chain reaction that has far reaching consequences. Okay Joe bumps sue. Sue Bumps harry . Harry bumps Devon.. And soon and soon until it reaches the bottom. MY job is at risk.
Worse is The mayor keeps saying numbers but every time he says a number its smaller less impressive and based on badly skewed math. Our equipment wouldnt be sold to a contractor for profit the TAX paid equipment may be sold at discountprices or JUST GIVEN away to the contractor profiting off tax money. Thus it would be a net LOSS of an asset. Media coverage of this news is terrible and biased at best. Yes The immediate effect I wont feel the effect right away I'll work at first but by next year I could be very fucked out of a job i love. A job I do well. Because of the huge Impacts of this. ON average Toronto Pays LESS taxes then surrounding municipalities. And 30 % less for its current garbage collection scheme then the rest of Ontario.
I apologize for panic and the mess Its just upsetting news. And i need to run to a doctors appointment for acid reflux pills. IM going to need them
