Let's get this out of the way: I am excited as HELL about the [Legend of Korra] that was announced and I am mostly puzzled about how to say her fucking name. Okay? Okay.

Now, I've seen rewatching the original series again with a friend and one thing popped up again that I don't remember anyone discussing about Avatar: what is the average human life expectancy in their world?

I guessed that it's close to 150 or more.

Now I say this because of Bumi, really. It's not just that he's old and isn't supposed to have been that agile--it's basically an MA cartoon. People are ecomancers and it's institutionalized for fuck's sake. But even martial artists have to conform to some sort of Earth limit and our ages are pretty much it (and this is without, say, nutrition and sanitation issues or war cutting your life short) On average, our lifespan is around 75 to 80 years, and when you're older than that (not saying we can't), it's considered really, really good to short of "miraculous".

Cue the "I have relatives in their 90s! It's not a miracle!" whining. Hush. I just said it happens. It's just not as much of the average. Anyway:

But when in "The King of Omashu" it was revealed that it was Bumi was the king, no one reacted to the fact at all. I don't know if it's because it's a kid's show she they think we can't do the math or they just didn't have time to react. A "Bumi...?" or something would have been enough, though, to show that it's a surprise. Bumi is significantly older than 80. (So is Aang. But Bumi doesn't look like a kid, either.)

I figure it's because that is normal. Yes, they reacted to Aang. But she thing is he looks like a kid. Okay.

Avatar Kyoshi created Kyoshi Island 370 years ago, and in it she was probably in her 30s, so...that leaves enough time for her AND Avatar Roku to be old...buuuut that isn't Kyoshi's statue that's next to him in the statue room of the Southern Air Temple. Could be evidence against what I'm saying, but who says Avatars live to be old all the time?

Erm. And about Shayu the Fire Sage: he mentions his grandfather being a sage at the beginning of the war, but that doesn't say anything about how hold he was, or Shayu's father or anything about Shayu's life, really. In fact. I think that would be a sort of interesting side story to read or something.

So...discuss. Tell me where I'm wrong in my suspicions or that I'm the one that can't do math. That's just always bugged me.

LOL, "ecomancy". Pirates of Dark Water fans HOLLA.

see i'm being intelligent
