You know one thing that kind of bugs me? When people rip on fantasy races, saying that they aren't creative because they aren't ugly or they look too much like us. To that I say: Humans aren't special. Most of the world believes we are, but we're not. We're just a language-using animal. That doesn't make us especially pretty or strong or good. In fact, we're pretty messed up. So are other animals. If we're all pretty goofy, what difference does it make if we make a creature that's like a human or more like an eagle?
That's kind of how humans work, really. Fantasy characters have to function and/or in similar ways to the way things we know of do (or have elements that we know of), or we can't react to it properly. I mean, if that's what you're going for.
Besides, what about all of the fantasy worlds where it CLEARLY isn't Earth, but the characters are (mostly) human or humanoid, such as Slayers, or Fire and Ice? And don't get me started on space series like Tenchi Muyo! and Star Trek. Maybe Greg Weisman is stupid for Gargoyles. They're from EARTH, too! Oh my Jesus!
Are any of those bad because most of those non-humans didn't have a slippery epidermis or lip-less mouths? No? Okay then.
Now I know that the argument is that it shows more creativity when you have creatures that are less identifiable. But you're going to have the problem of people not being able to identify with them as easily. If you don't care about that, fine. But it doesn't make those that do care lazy, either.
