CONvergence: Vidding 101 Panel Playlist

Jul 11, 2012 20:26

I had a fantastic time attending CONvergence this past weekend, as I always do! I sat on a number of panels and had a great time on all of them.

I'll be posting the recs from this year's slash panel as soon as I get them collected from the various panelists, but in the meantime I thought it good to go ahead and post the list of vids from the Vidding 101 panel.

I've attempted vid-based panels once or twice before at this con and turnout was pretty poor because vids tend to get confused with mashups and fan films in the CVG crowd. This time I decided to make it more of an explanatory, discussion based panel with clips to demonstrate the topics at hand. That seems to have worked because we had something like 15 people show up! Several of them with insightful questions and open minds, even though they had no clue about vids going in.

These are mostly in the order we showed them. If I've forgotten about something, or there's one we mentioned that I left out, just let me know and I'll hunt down the link.

The warmup/feelgood vids:

Ballroom Blitz by
absolutedestiny
Fandom: Ghostbusters

Mortal Kombat by bradcpu
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

What I Like About You (Karen & The Babes) by humansrsuperior
Fandom: Doctor Who Confidential

Vids from the panel proper:

SAIL by Amy Kinley
Fandom: Sherlock
Demonstrating the "YouTube" aesthetic. High effects and filters to create a mood and punctuate lyrics.

Hook Shot by
kuwadora
Fandom: Multi-source
Showing the incredible dedication of vidders who use multiple sources and placing clips with similar movements and/or themes side by side.

Glad You Came by greensilver and sisabet
Fandom: The Avengers
Cam footage example for when you have fandom feelings but not the DVD footage to back them up just yet.

If I Was Your Girl by
danegen
Fandom: Merlin (BBC)
A shipper vid that cuts source and uses effects in such a way as to create a narrative and highlight the *ahem* important things. We didn't even get to the dance break in the panel. Check it out.

Debauchery in the UK by
mresundance
Fandom: Lord Byron
Recontextualizing pop music and use of unconventional source and forever associating Miley Cyrus with Lord Byron in your head.

Good by jarrow
Fandom: Hairspray
Editing dancing to a different beat than the original.

Get Your Coat by humansrsuperior
Fandom: Sherlock (BBC)
An alternate example of using movement to match the music and also vids that use instrumental audio.

Teardrop by gaby0189x
Fandom: Inception
Using outside source to create a new narrative and/or an alternate universe.

Doombringer by KwAsEk56
Fandom: Berserk Manga
An AMV or an art project? Yes.

And here are some vids and AMVs we didn't have the time to see or mentioned in passing.

Triangolo by Ileia
Fandom: Kimi ni Todoke
This AMV takes the storyline of the show and gives a much darker take on it. It's such a different, darker mood and gives the relationships a darker flavor.

A Study In Time by di_br
Fandoms: Sherlock and Doctor Who
Clever editing leads to a seamless crossover. It's like fanfic for your eyes.

Fix You by
sdwolfpup
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
An example of a vid with an extremely strong point of view that turns the traditional narrative on its head.

Give It Up by jarrow
Fandom: Multi-source (80's movies)
When Liz and I got our wires crossed trying to figure out which "matching dance to music" vid to show as an example, this is the one she was thinking of. If you lived through the 80s, you should enjoy this one greatly.

Poker Face
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes
"Now with less turquoise." An example of a remastered vid that previously utilized cam footage.

A Prelude to Dreams by Shin
Fandom: Multi-source AMV
An example I wanted to show of the "AMV aesthetic" which tends to be quick paced, multi-source, and holding appeal to a wide audience since it isn't contextual to the source it's using.

Pop Culture Fan Promo by ATBvids
Fandom: Community
A meta-contextual vid that celbrates Community and fandom celebrating Community. Much like how the show itself celebrates fandom. And then set to a mashup of various pop culture songs. Maybe that makes this meta-meta-contextual? This was made at the time Community was unexpectedly brought back after its half year hiatus, to give you the necessary context.

Last Dance by Annnarchist
Fandoms: Game of Thrones and Mulan
The epic love of Mulan and Jon Snow. aka, the "FANDOM CAN DO ANYTHING" vid.

Other resources for finding vids:

vidding/vidding: A vid announcement community that also contains links to technical help and meta discussions. A great resource for vidders and vid watchers.

veni_vidi_vids/veni_vidi_vids: An ongoing collection of vid recommendation posts, helpfully sorted by tag for that new shiny fandom you just fell into.

animemusicvideos.org: Pretty much THE repository for anime music videos on the internet. It has some great search functions for narrowing down to particular shows or songs or creators.

fyeahfanvids and fanvidrecs on tumblr: Several rec communities on tumblr.

YouTube: Naturally. Although the other resources here more or less narrow your search results down.

There are, of course, many other sites and comms out there. Feel free to drop them in the comments if you have one you want to share.

Thank you to my co-panelists,
belindabird and bendtothesun for facilitating the discussion with me and for bringing some great examples from this list to the table!

Dear lovely vidders, I hope none of you on this list mind that I showed clips of your work to demonstrate the topics we were discussing. Since this was a conversation more than a vidshow, there wasn't really opportunity for me to ask your permission before showing a clip. If you would prefer to have your work removed from this list, drop me a note either in comments or via DM and I'll be happy to do so.
