I WAS UNINFORMED THAT REICHENBACH WAS TO BE A THING IN THIS MOVIE. I need a Reichenbach warning. Seriously. It coming out of nowhere for me caused the loss of all blood to
cottonandice's hand, which I was holding steadfastly onto trying not to let all my inhuman fangirl noises come out in the theater. It was a feat.
I was also unaware that Moran was going to turn up! That was a pleasant surprise. And I adore how the winning strategy to defeating Moran is essentially "Get a bigger gun."
lugia222 thought I would be very upset over Irene's death, but I wasn't because it never even crossed my mind that she might actually be dead. No fucking way. You can't off Irene Adler and certainly not like that. She's out there somewhere lying low, because if there's anything she does well it's getting away. I thought they would return to her in the movie and tie up that loose end, but I guess not? Anyway. Not dead. Assuredly not dead.
Mycroft! Stephen Fry! How I adore you! Certainly not enough of him in this movie (well, aside from ALL of him appearing in this movie at that one point) and a very different dynamic than any of the other takes on the Holmes brothers' relationship I've seen. But that's the Guy Ritchie films for you. But "Sherly"? REALLY? Someone's been reading fanfic. I don't know what to do with that because I loathe it in fanfic, but it somehow works for me here? Maybe because it's coming from Mycroft and seems like a remnant from childhood and Sherlock and Mycroft here have a more playful relationship. No one else could get away with it.
Mary! Also not enough of her in this. But what there was was total badassery. Her with that gun on the train hnnnnnnnnnn. And at the end, working with Lestrade to bankrupt Moriarty. She and Mycroft are BFFs now. This is my headcanon, let me show you it.
New girl! Was sort of secondary to everything that was going on, but was excellent at holding her own. So good on her.
Moriarty! Was delightful and I loved their final chess match.
SHALL WE TALK ABOUT THE GAY NOW? THERE WAS A LOT OF IT. I'm going to try very hard to be coherent. Let's see how it turns out.
The extent to which they are in love knows no bounds. I went in knowing full well about the crossdressing which, you know, is a thing. That I enjoy. A lot. And then "Lie down with me, Watson" about killed me. But THERE WAS DANCING. HOLY. I JUST. That is one of my bulletproofs. And it happened. Right there on the screen. Before I could even think to hope for it. Ffffffffffffff.
The wedding too! I'd assumed the wedding would happen off screen, but we got it. And Mary has the patience of a saint, letting the boys roll in post-stag party barely on time for the wedding and in a state. And then Sherlock's face during the ceremony. RDJ, stop breaking my heart! I'm glad Sherlock got to be best man. All the fic versions of the wedding I've read are so sad.
I AM SO HAPPY JOHN DID NOT HAVE TO WAIT 3 FUCKING YEARS TO FIND OUT SHERLOCK WAS STILL ALIVE. That would have been too much of a downer for the Guy Ritchie films, thank fuck. The camouflage thing was utterly hilarious too.
There are things I'm forgetting, to be sure. I'm still processing it, because it was a lot to handle and I think my brain short-circuited due to the sheer volume of subtext.
ETA: I was a bit too overstimulated to notice, but did they use the reversed "Get what's in your hand out of my face" bit from the trailer in actual movie? I can't remember it now that I'm trying to think of it.
Non-spoilery reaction: I am so in love with this film.
