I want to make a giant post about how completely fulfilling Detour was this year, but the feeling is still a bit too big to put into words. So instead, here are some snapshots of things I want to remember about it:
I walked over 23 miles in the name of the Programming department, I got to hang out with so many friends from so many different parts of the world and made several new ones, I was looped into some shenanigans at Opening Ceremonies at the last second, I rickrolled the con, became mayor of Detour, made my invisible Anti-Con-Drama Hat magically visible (thank you again,
rubyd!), shook hands with Mr. Shake Hands Man (who then hit Charles with my JO SMASH squeaky hammer), and saw Gojira Party happened despite the odds.
The Utena panel felt too short a time to spend with cool and smart people yet again, the Women in Anime and Manga panel gave me hope for humanity (I anxiously await the creation of both the "men who are repulsed by fanservice" and "women in defense of sexiness" clubs), and Shiny New Anime was well attended. I heard a lot of good things about the It Gets Better panel too, and if I can convince Rin of it (which shouldn't be hard) we can make it a staple of the con going forward so I can actually attend it next year. Karaoke got off to a bumpy start on Friday, but
kirideth,
goldeneyeuro, and I were able to nail it down to perfection on Saturday with the assistance of the lovely
dejana and my amazing badgers. (One of whom was Dr. Scott in fishnets from Rocky Horror. Bless.) Highlights included Snorlax doing the cabbage patch to the Pokérap and staff abandoning our stations to sing Gay Bar at the top of our lungs in the absence of the person who had requested it.
My entire Programming staff stepped it up this year and made shit happen (like a boss). So many thanks go out to my incredible subheads,
hoshizuke,
willow_one, and
jariten. Also a very special thanks to
belindabird for taking on everything that I threw at you, haha. And of course thank you to everyone who volunteered to help me out despite not being on staff or being in other departments.
There was much crying to be had at closing ceremonies as our chairman of the last five years,
stuckintraffik, stepped down and handed the reigns over to the new guy. And together, our little con of 4,500 people raised over $36,000 to help Japan in the tsunami/earthquake relief efforts.
I love my Minnesota fandom. And I am looking very much forward to 2012.
