I don't even know where to start to convey exactly how amazing of a weekend I had at
CONvergence.
Every one of my 11 panels was fantastic. I love and adore the slash panel, as always, because I always meet new people there. This year, I met
bessyboo and her lovely girl!Jack costume. (I need to remember that we should do a Meta Panel next year too!) And I also ran into
lunate8 a little later on. Another local podficcer! Yeah! (Podfic panel next year? Y/Y?)
Scifi/Fantasy Improv also went really well! We had an excellent turnout and all our participants made the games all the funnier. ("Captain, we'll get the dunkaroos on the way to Mordor with the cows.")
Here is the beautiful picture of our bachelor and his bachelor-thing, Mufasa, after we played the Dating Game.
I somehow managed to squeeze in a couple World Cup games, which is made all the better by watching with a bunch of other geeks who spontaneously and regularly converged upon the big screen TVs near the bar to see it.
I met Jeremy Bulloch at the Dead Dog party. I'm not the kind of fan who seeks out guests of honor and fangirls all over them usually, and I missed the signing session, so even though I brought the Boba Fett action figure I've owned since 1995 to the con, I was happy to just meet him. But both
geekboyonline and Mr. Bulloch instructed me to go get it from my room so he could sign it, ha. According to him the figure is pretty rare to come by these days so I should hang onto it, and I certainly will!
Then somehow I hung out with all my friends and Paul Cornell for half the weekend. I'm still having trouble reconciling that in my brain. If you ever get the chance to meet Paul, do it. Go out of your way for it. Because he is still very much a fan at heart, is always willing to talk with anyone about just about anything, and he can party hard with the best of them.*
Thank goodness for that and his great sense of humor. Otherwise I think
masproductions might have broken him.
He kept up with the party regimen into the wee hours of the night. And
he sang the MASPro version of We Built This City at karaoke with us. After that we let him know he was an official member of the group. Because once you sing We Built This City and party at CON with us, there's no going back.
porcelainsakura taught him the proper usage of "Oh Snap!" which apparently the British do not say. (Until now!) Let me tell you that there is nothing funnier than hearing "Oh Snap!" coming from a slightly confused British man. And now he is following several of us on twitter and
asking Neil Gaiman, who he is visiting today, about it. ♥
Also! Oh my gosh! Dude knows Utena. Paul has seen Utena and talked about it with me. We both agreed the best parts of the show are the ones you never see on screen and how everything is implied. Apparently his wife is a big anime/manga fan. Next time he comes back (and he really should), he needs to bring her with so she and I can talk anime. I think some nefarious plans need to be made to invite her to Anime Detour and she can bring Paul along for the ride. ;)
I feel less like I met a guest of honor and more like I made a friend through fandom. Who happens to write for Doctor Who.
Best con ever. I must agree.
*If by some chance you ever find yourself playing Just a Minute with Paul, work "Mr. Cardington," "Gdańsk," his evil Russian/Polish twin, and/or "banana flavoring" into the game. It'll be worth it, trust me.
