HOLMES! ♥♥♥♥♥

It was everything I wanted from it and more.

So very, very much more!

I'm not sure I can formulate sentences about this movie that aren't in untranslatable fangirlish yet.

My one and only fear, that they would make this SHERLOCK HOLMES: ACTION HERO and cut out the brainy bits, were absolutely, completely, and utterly unfounded. The sheer smart of Holmes permeated every second from start to end and just blew me away. Thank heavens.

In fact between trying to read in between the lines, follow what was happening on screen, and keep up with the revelations in between assorted bouts of fisticuffs, I kind of have a headache. But to be clear, it's the best headache I've ever had.

So yes, brains plus the ability to kick your ass in a TOTALLY BRAINY WAY. The complete package! \o/ WINRAR IS ME!

Okay, so maybe I went in with a few other fears. Namely, that the characters would be something other than the ones that I knew and loved from the novels. Again, completely unfounded. Everything I loved about them in the written word was carried over into the movie. Their strengths, their flaws, their obsessions, their relationships. And in addition to that, that the magic bits would actually turn out to be magic. NOT SO! Another thank goodness.

On a completely different subject, can we talk about how much I love Irene Adler for a moment? Because I do. And I'm not strictly talking about the movieverse version here. She's smart. As smart if not smarter than Holmes himself. Except that she plays fast and loose with morality. Do you see the recipe for my obsession yet? I have nitpicks about her portrayal, mostly to do with her damsel in distress role in the movie. But that she was in the movie at all is kind of wonderful and amazing. And she had several occasions where she did prove her considerable intelligence.

Then there was Mary, who I didn't even realize was going to be in this movie until the moment where it was mentioned Watson was in the process of moving out. I wasn't entirely sure what to think about her at first, because hello impediment to my favorite Victorian OTP. I was prepared for her to be the wet blanket and used as a narrative wedge between our two heroes and all that typical bullshit for female characters. And then she really wasn't. She stood her ground. ("Take Watson-" "I intend to.") She displayed her intelligence by seeing through Holmes' disguise. (Brief side note for: HEE! THEY KEPT THE DISGUISES!) AND she gets it. She gets that Holmes and Watson need each other. She doesn't stand in the way of it either, which of course leaves the door WIDE, WIDE open for any number of pairing combinations.

Speaking of pairings, that was subtext at breakneck speed. Holy crap. There was so much that I don't even know where to start. I will just say that this movie loves me and my slash loving brethren. We are soulmates.

My one and only disappointment? That "They've been flirting like this for hours" from the trailer was not actually in the movie. But it was made up for by the fact that they were actively flirting for hours. Oh, and by Holmes stating that without his tongue he is useless to Watson. I shit you not.

This is my favorite holiday gift. ♥ THANK YOU, GUY RITCHIE. ♥
